About the Author
George Rude was born in Oslo in 1910 to a Norwegian father and a Scottish mother and, after serving as a fireman in London during the Blitz and later teaching in a variety of London schools, held professorships at Adelaide and Flinders Universities in Australia and then at Concordia University in Montreal.

Interesting but difficult reading

I read this book since I have a great interest in the French Revolution and discovered it to be an informative book about what kind of people were involved in the "mob scene" actions that took place during the French Revolution. The book was clearly written for scholar-like readers and not really for casual reader who may not find this book an easy reading. The writing style isn't very good and text reading somewhat boringly.

One of the elements I disliked the most about this book was that the author liked to used French quotes without English translation when he tries to make a reference. You have to look in the back of the book for the footnotes on exactly what was written. I found this approach to be awkward and silly which handicapped the flow of the passage - unless you read French that is. If the book is written in English, write down the English translation to the quote (or put the translation immediately below the quote), anything else is just some sort of "elitist" over kill.

Otherwise, this book should interest anyone with a good background on the French Revolution but anyone else should not bother with it.

Not a good choice to learn about the French Revolution.

Rude throws facts at you constantly in such a way that it is extremely difficult to get a clear view of what is actually going on in the revolution. The quotes are still in French and translated in the back of the book which is just an annoyance to someone who doesn't know French. He also references to many people, places, and things to remember all of their relationships to one another. Just Pick another book to learn about the French Revolution.

In this oversize picture book, numerous contestants are gathering for the Dinosaur Dance judging, among them Steggy Stegosaurus, T. Rex, and Patty Apatosaurus. The emcee, a large unidentified dinosaur with sharp teeth and big claws, introduces the participants one by one: "Tap along with raptors,/do the Troodie boogaloo,/stomp a 'saurus samba/round Patty's pile of poo." Each large page shows one of the flamboyantly bright reptiles doing its thing. Meanwhile, the four diminutive dino judges are shown in front of the stage, holding up cards with numbers after the contestants perform, but--strangely--the judges seem to be disappearing as the show progresses. The final two spreads announce: "Come on! Dance with dinosaurs!/You could be a winner!/It's tons of fun for everyone, until it's time... [page turn]... for dinner!" The corresponding artwork depicts the emcee chasing all of the dinosaurs. On the last page, he says "Good night!" and wipes his mouth with a hankie as bones litter the floor around him. Jane Clarke is a poet and acclaimed author of many picture books, including GILBERT THE GREAT, illustrated by Charles Fuge, which won the Sheffield Children’s Book Award and the Norfolk Children’s Book Award. Jane won the Nottingham Children’s Book Award for the acclaimed Stuck in the Mud. She lives in Kent, England.

Tons of dinosaur fun!

I was pretty skeptical when I first heard about this book. I remember thinking "this is going to be very, very bad, or incredibly funny." Lucky for us, it is very funny indeed. This is a great pick for any dinosaur lover, and no, I don't think you need to be a fan of Dancing with The Stars in order to enjoy these dino antics. These dinosaurs are cute instead of scary, even the T. Rex who likes to tango. Readers can do "the Steggy twist and shout", "Disco with the Duckbills", or "stomp a'saurus samba round Patty's pile of poo." Try reading that out loud in story time and see if you get a laugh or two.

One line of text per page makes this a quick read, and the bright, large, extremely colorful cartoon illustrations mark this as an excellent pick for a preschool group read aloud. This is a high energy book that also manages to include each dinosaur's full name in a beginning two page spread entitled "meet the contestants". Full of glitz and glamour, Dancing with the Dinosaurs is sure to charm in story time or for one on one sharing.

Dancing with the stars parody

Have you ever seen a T. Rex dancing the tango or a Baryonyx dancing the rumba? Bold, bright pictures tell a funny story about a dinosaur dancing competition. The story begins with a list of all of the contestants, each with their correct scientific name. It features several different types of dinosaurs and their dance styles. The rhyming style of writing makes it an easy and enjoyable read. It ends on a funny note with the announcer trying to eat the contestants and judges. The illustrations are bright and colorful and fit well with the story. This book will appeal to any child, but the dinosaur lovers will enjoy it the most. The large print and easy-to-read words also make this a great book for beginning readers. Both of my children (ages 3 and 5) enjoyed the book. Their favorite part was the illustrations. It is a cute, fun little book that will be enjoyed for many years.
This book is for ages 2 to 5.

This book was so much fun for my daughter! hahaha She laughed at the illustrations on every page! The concept is very cute, but I felt like I was tongue-tied the entire time! hahahaha The dino words all mixed up like make for a very hard to pronounce kinda book.

This has to be one of the most engrossing titles I have read in a long time. Zuyev gives all the details of life in the Soviet Union from boyhood to elite fighter pilot. Soviet tactics and technology--particularly that dealing with the MIG-29 "Fulcrum"--as well as the barbaric way the Russian government treated its people are included. Zuyev is a man who risked everything--and lost perhaps more--in his struggle to reach freedom.

The world has lost a courageous individual.

I just saw an Associated Press news article telling of the death of Alexander Zuyev on June 10, 2001. He was only 40 years old. He and a friend died last Sunday when the Yakovlev 52 they were flying crashed in Washington state north of Seattle.
Read this book. It gives a fascinating description not only of growing up in the Soviet Union but of the difficulty of becoming a military pilot. It also gives a sickening picture of just how badly communism chewed up and destroyed its best people: Zuyev's own mother--whom he rescued--and some of his fellow pilots who weren't so lucky. His decision to defect was not made lightly or easily. The corruption and contradictions he saw were too much to take anymore. He had the courage to leave it all behind and take a chance with a nation he had been told so many lies about. The drugged cake was a stroke of genius.
Sadly, a plane crash has done what a sentry's bullet in the arm did not. This world is a poorer place. I never met him but I wish I had, if only to say "Thank you."

What an amazing book!

...This book taught me a lot about life. There were so many obstacles he had to overcome. I have always been amazed by the strength and endurance this man had.I never knew a person could endure such hardships and still be so unbelievably focused.When I get depressed and feel I'M having hard times I always think back to his story and feel ashamed of myself for thinking so selfishly. He was truly a sensitive and beautiful soul... This book shows the determined and powerful side of Alex, and his story is truly incredible. I honestly hope you will take the time to read the book. It will take you on a trip that you never though possible. The adreneline rush, the tears, the love, and most important, the incredible adventures of Alexander Zuyev...

About the Author

Carole T. Ferrand, Ph.D., is Professor of Speech, Language, and Hearing Science at Hofstra University. Her research interests include the acoustic aspects of normal and disordered speech production in monolingual and bilingual speakers, and the acoustics of birdsong. Dr. Ferrand earned a B.A. from Witwatersrand University, and her M.S. and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University, University Park.

The subject of energy is never far from most people's minds. We wish we had more, we wonder where what we used to have went, and we worry that our future energy is overcommitted to work and other obligations from which we derive no pleasure.

Vital Energy seems the perfect book for solving this increasingly widespread dilemma. Based on the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, which originated in India, it will help you identify yourself as an earth-, fire-, or wind-based personality. (Earth people tend to be more nurturing, fire people more competitive and driven, wind people more flighty and creative.) And then it presents seven key ways in which each of those types can improve their lives: finding yourself, eliminating toxins, feeding yourself better, building loving relationships, exercising, finding meaning in your work, playing passionately, and finding happiness and contentment by simply being alive.

While that may sound like an ethereal set of goals and standards, Dr. David Simon's advice is really focused and easy to apply. For example, in the chapter on exercise, a fire person is told to choose outdoor or water-based fitness activities and to not make exercise another way in which he asserts his competitive drive. In the chapter on building loving relationships, Dr. Simon offers a way to "metabolize" feelings so that you can digest them, absorb what you need, and eliminate the rest, as you would with food. There's even advice on how to have better bowel movements in the morning.

Dr. Simon is medical director of Deepak Chopra's Center for Well Being, so the readers most interested in Dr. Chopra's work will probably be drawn to Vital Energy. But it would be a shame if this book only ended up in the hands of those already familiar with Ayurvedic medicine and philosophy. Vital Energy is a completely engaging, easy-to-follow introduction to Ayurveda, and anyone searching for better health, vitality, and well-being should give it a read. --Lou Schuler

By filling out the numerous questionnaires contained in this book, readers can discover which of the seven basic mind-body types they are: earth, wind, fire, or some combination of these. However, Simon explains that we all embody the three basic principles to varying degrees, and he suggests that understanding how these forces interact and affect the mind-body connection can lead to increased vitality. Vital Energy - a must read for feeling great!

This book was inspiring because it reminded me to do the things I inherently knew inside to help myself feel balanced and vital. Ever since I turned 35 years old, all I have wanted was to feel good inside and out and I could not figure out why this was so difficult to attain (and my tiredness seemed to come on so suddenly)...I was exhausted. Getting in touch with my true nature through the simple steps (life concepts) that Dr. Simon illustrates enables me to feel truly alive again. I am elated to know that such physicians exist out there that are truly interested in a persons well being and can treat the whole being! I look forward to going to the Chopra Center one day and experiencing the programs he developed in person.

Vital Energy is of Vital Importance

Vital Energy: The Seven Keys to Invigorate Body, Mind and Soul is a landmark contribution to health and wellness. The author poses two important questions:
1) Why are so many people overwhelmed by fatigue, lack of enthusiasm, and depression?
2) Why are so many people haunted by the sense that something vitally important is missing from their lives?
In pursing answers to these questions, Simon focuses on the idea that "we have learned a lot about how to treat illness but not much about how to create health." In medical school he learned that modern medicine can effectively deal with the symptoms of disease without necessarily helping them to heal.
Simon states, "I learned that health and illness were the consequence of the thoughts and choices people made." This personal discovery came to him through the tension that existed between his medical studies and his cross-cultural explorations of health and wellness in various parts of the world.
Healing is a holistic concept that has global reach. The idea of healing in many cultures is focused on creating a greater sense of unity across mind, body and spirit. Simon promotes the belief that the experience of happiness and health represents an essential unity across mind, body and spirit while unhappiness and disease represents some degree of disintegration. A broad view of healing is critical for reintegrating these essential connections and David SimonÕs ÒVital EnergyÓ is an essential contribution to everyoneÕs health and well being.

Very Practical.

Dr. David Simon has done an excellent job in describing ancient Ayurvedic wisdom for well being of body, mind and soul. Dr. Simon has explained in simple modern language the Ayurvedic principles for invigorating body, mind and soul. Although, being an Indian, I was familiar with many of the things stated by the author, the simplicity and clarity of the whole book has value- added to my own understanding of the ancient vedic science. Author has dealt with almost all the methods of reaching the source of vital energy which is available within all of us. Author's suggestions are not only very useful but so pratical that one can use them for one's own benifit without much of complex efforts.
I emphatically suggest everyone read this book, practice the principles told methodically and ENJOY invigorating VITAL ENERGY for body, mind and soul.
Lastly, but not in the least, this book must be kept on the book shelf for day to day reference till the time the principles get thoroughly ingrained in one's own Mind-Body system.
