This quaint, picturesque community has an interesting history. For years it was a rural hamlet with a nearby pond, simply called Log Pond. It later became Apex, and the pond was eventually drained in the name of progress. Apex appeared on the map because of the coalfields in Chatham/Lee County. The coal companies needed to get their coal to Raleigh, and around 1870, the Chatham Railroad was chugging along, right by Log Pond. It officially became Apex with the establishment of a post office. Apex put the railroad to use immediately and shipped lumber, tar, turpentine, and pitch. Early on, Apex passed a few ordinances that some might find in the Wild West, including those dealing with whiskey, gambling, and prostitution. The town suffered two fires in the early 1900s, but its residents persevered, and Apex’s small-town charm is still enjoyed today.

When author Sherry Monahan joined the Apex Writers Guild she did so as a well-acknowledged author of four books on the Old West.

The Willow Spring resident never considered for a moment that she would soon use her savvy research abilities much closer to home.

All of that changed, however, after a short discussion with guild founder Bob Crowley.

“Bob told me I should do a book on Apex’s history,” said Monahan. “He said Apex was once a lot like the Old West with its sheriff and dusty roads. I really like Apex so I decided to look into it.”

The result is the soon-to-be released “Apex,” which is part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series.

The 128-page book contains more than 200 vintage photos from the town’s long and storied history.

Monahan hopes readers will gain a sense of how Apex residents lived in decades gone by.

“It’s really interesting how the town was once wild and wooly,” said Monahan. “Now it appears quiet and almost Victorian. But Apex was once in the middle of nowhere and was once very wild.

“I think the book is a great way to look back to the past and see how Apex has evolved. I hope people gain a sense of what the town was like years ago.”

One of the most enjoyable aspects of putting the book together, said Monahan, was meeting with so many friendly people willing to share their photographs and stories.

Amateur historian Ann Grebing, town clerk Georgia Evangelist, and longtime resident Jacques Burgess are just a few of the many people who provided valuable material for the book. Photos were also provided by Apex Baptist Church, Apex United Methodist Church and the NC State Archives.

“Doing research is like solving a mystery and you have to follow the clues,” said Monahan. “I would meet with someone and they would steer me toward someone else who also had good stories or photos.

“I met the most wonderful people and everyone was just so helpful. They were willing to just open their private photo albums to me, which helps makes the book so much better.”

I purchased the book because I used the first edition when I was in college. I thought the new edition would have more information and more receipts. I was disappointed that I did not. I would have liked the first edition better.

This was a textbook for one of my culinary classes. It is easy,to read and filled with a lot of information. We made several of the recipes and each were easy to follow and tasted good. I would recommend this book to others. Great information about nutrients and I use this as a reference. Written in a way most ages can understand. I think this would be a good tool for homeschooling middle to high school ages.

Great Book on DOM Fundamentals

Great book on learning the fundamentals of manipulating and traversing the DOM using JavaScript without a library like jQuery, Zepto, etc.The writing style is very similar to JavaScript Enlightenment with small, bite-sized topics that include a brief introduction to the topic followed by a code sample and a link to a live version on JSFiddle.

At the end of the book the author shows a way to bundle this knowledge to create your own jQuery-inspired library for modern browsers. Think of it as a Zepto or jQuery version 2 library with no support for older versions of IE. Teaches you some neat JavaScript best practices and common patterns.

If you are building hybrid HTML 5 applications where you are only targeting a specific browser, like Mobile Safari on iOS, this type of knowledge can be very useful as you won't need a library like jQuery that has a lot of code to support multiple browsers. If you are a web designer who went straight to jQuery and have no knowledge of working with the DOM using JavaScript, this will be rather eye-opening.

If you like learning the fundamentals from books with less discussion and more code samples with sample output, this is a good book. If you like longer and more in-depth discussions with little code, then this book won't meet your needs.

Detailed DOM Examples

Cody Lindley takes the reader into the depths of the DOM with his work. This book does what it says it will in the beginning introduction by presenting a very terse cookbook: you won't be seeing tons of lengthy explanations. One of the best perks of this book was that in ebook form->the code was presented with links to code examples in jsFiddle (with Firebug lite) or github. This made it easy to run, modify, and look at the code in depth without even having to setup an environment or retype examples. Chapter 12 was also a nice addition to this book as it showed a short example of taking what you learned about in the previous chapters and thinking about the development of a dom library in many ways similar to what jQuery does today. While not very long, I also liked the chapter on DocumentFragments. It was nice to see that this often overlooked part of the DOM got some attention.

Overall conclusion: This book is great for a very specific niche. If you want to take a quick tour of the DOM-then this is the book for you. Don't expect long lectures on the topics-just short examples.

Awesome Vanilla DOM Manipulation Reference

Got this because I needed to learn some native DOM manipulation for a job interview I was going to have. It's a very direct book which in my opinion covers the most useful parts of the native/modern DOM model.

I read all of it in one night and I think it is one of the best references I've read in the last year and has definitely made me a better front end developer.

Great in so many ways!!

My daughter (age 3) and I love this book. The words are simple and repetitive -- great for learning to read. The pictures are very well done. There are flaps to lift up which involve the child in the telling of the story and there is the opportunity to teach your child about different cultures, different places and an animal he or she doesn't hear about every day. I call out for my little llama all day and my daughter thinks it's great. A great children's book and a beautiful keepsake too.

This is a great book for individuals involved in professional services that have not received formal sales training. The book provides the author’s insight regarding four pillars for relationship-based, selling success, each providing realistic tactics that can be immediately put into daily practice. Every chapter is sprinkled with wisdom statements for the reader to dwell upon with the goal of shifting their life into one based on cause and purpose rather than being victimized by life’s circumstances. I enjoyed reading this concise personable book and when finished, I put it down feeling BREAKAWAY was well worth the money. I am looking forward to the next one from Tim Phillips!

Great investment of time and money

Unlike most motivational and sales authors today, the author of “BREAKAWAY” doesn’t feel the need to say in 100 words what can be said in 10. In that spirit I will briefly say that this book is straightforward, enjoyable to read, and leaves the reader better off for having invested the time to read it. It’s not a traditional sales book. It doesn't have countless chapters filled with methodologies and consulting schlock. Instead, this book offers tried and true lessons (referred to as pillars) that anyone should follow in order to provide the heroic service that will result in success both in sales and life.

The author breaks down the system into logical blocks, by initially introducing the architecture of LTE, explaining the
techniques used for radio transmission and reception and the overall operation of the system, and concluding with more specialized topics such as LTE voice calls and the later releases of the specifications. This methodical approach enables readers to move on to tackle the specifications and the more advanced texts with confidence.

Christopher Cox is a professional technical trainer and consultant in mobile telecommunications. He is an expert in the technical and radio network planning aspects of LTE and UMTS, and regularly delivers training courses about them to audiences drawn from equipment manufacturers, network operators and consultancies worldwide. He has a degree in Physics and a PhD in Radio Astronomy from the University of Cambridge and 20 years’ experience in scientific and technical consultancy, telecommunications and training.

Comprehensive and easy read intro to LTE.

I only read the first chapter and browsed the rest. It covers most concepts of LTE and it seems to explain how protocols and methods work in enough detail for an engineer who has basic communications knowledge. There are a few charts would be better understandable with color use instead of grey scale.
