About the Author
David Titterton is currently the technical leader of laser systems at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), part of the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). He is a member of the Dstl College of Fellows (individual merit scientists), and is a visiting professor at the University of Cranfield.

John Weston is a Principal Scientist at Halliburton Sperry-Sun researching inertial/gyroscopic systems for the surveying of underground pipelines and well bores. He has worked in missile guidance and control, originally with British Aerospace plc. He received a BSc in Electrical Engineering and an MSc in Systems Engineering.

Lots of good reference material

This book has the most comprehensive breakdown and analysis of the principles and modeling of accelerometer and gyro technologies I've seen in a book yet, though there are already some very good books on stable platform products. There's also a wealth of information on various coordinate systems used in the vicinity of Earth. While an entire chapter is devoted to MEMS, it would seem that the mechanization material (as well as alignment) is geared towards higher-end devices, in that many MEMS units I've encountered cannot readily identify any component of Earth's rotation, making much of the math superfluous for my application. There is a chapter near the end that deals briefly with aiding, but don't count on that being enough. A number of real-world periodic motions, both short-term (coning, sculling) and long-term (Schuler, Foucault), are identified, and the references to literature at the end of each section are invaluable in digging deeper. Kalman filtering is relegated to an appendix, but that is fine, as this book is significantly more oriented to applications; pick up a copy of Gelb if you need an intro to estimation.

Despite covering a wide range of complex subjects, the explanations in this book are clear. This book played a key role in my understanding of INS systems, and I highly recommend it to others.

A good introduction from the ground up. Concepts were easily conveyed to the reader. I'm much more comfortable with strapdown systems after reading this book.

Not an American Girl fan, but these books are all about "it's okay to be you, even if everyone is different"

Bought this for a ten-year-old who doesn't yet have to deal with this (but it's probably on it's way)...she loved it, read it cover to cover and shared it with her friends.

I'm not an American Girl fan: I think their products are over-priced and elitist, but their books offer an astoundingly grounded viewpoint that reinforces the "it's okay to be you, even if everyone is different" mantra that I can only respect and support. The book is not too thick, has pictures, and bright colours. There is a lot of empathy encouraged.

I bought this in conjunction with the American Girl's "Smart Girl's Guide to Friendship Troubles".

Sometimes my young one doesn't know what to ask or has no idea about a concept until she reads it - then it all fits for her in many ways. Sometimes she reads, and we discuss further. These books are done in an easy reading, quick to scan, non-formal education way that appeals to my girl.

SEANAN McGUIRE is the author of the October Daye urban fantasy series, the InCryptid series, and other works. She also writes darker fiction as Mira Grant.

Seanan lives in Seattle with her cats, a vast collection of creepy dolls, and horror movies, and sufficient books to qualify her as a fire hazard.

might make you rethink some of those children books

I've been a fan of Seanan McGuire since her October Daye series, which are wonderful and a blend of fantasy and mystery. Couldn't get into her InCryptid as much, but she is a talented writer with a great imagination who can blend darkness well with her stories without making them inaccessible. I was interested in her Every Heart a Doorway when I saw a teaser for it, so of course I was happy to review it.

I think my biggest disappointment is that this was so short, a novella, because there's so much promise to this world. The premise is the children who somehow found a way to those 'other worlds', the underworlds, the fairy world, the worlds without logic or light.... Eleanor/Ely West runs a school/boarding house where she takes them in to give them a home, and it starts off with Nancy's arrival. Nancy has returned from an underworld and wants to return more than anything. In part, the school is there to help her accept that she most likely can't.

Not long after Nancy's arrival, one of the other children is murdered, and that sets up the main plot of the book, who is the murderer and why. Being a new arrival and from a 'dark' world, Nancy is considered suspect and so she, along with some of the other children, set out to figure out the reason for the death(s). The plot is suspenseful, something McGuire does well, and there are clues left for the reader so the ending doesn't come out of left field or seem too illogical. My main complaint is the ending of the book does seem a bit rushed, especially Nancy's ending, making me wish that this had been a bit of a longer book. I wish we could know a bit more about some of the children and the worlds, seen a little more about their background... perhaps there will be more in the future books. But what is here is more than enough to get me hooked, I will say, to want the next book. The writing is great and so is the premise, and I enjoyed the characters the author did focus on as some of them were refreshing and not your average takes ( such as Sumi).

Doors go both ways.

One of my favourite things about Seanan McGuire (and the list is long, believe me) is that she really understands stories. Not just how to tell them, how to write them, but how we often put our experiences up as stories, we use stories as teaching devices and cautionary tales, there is always a beginning, middle, and end. Even when life doesn't generally work that way.

Every Heart a Doorway is told with the haunting descriptions and fantastic characterization I expect from this author, but there were so many delightful surprises in a book that is honestly very dark and full of pain. An asexual main protagonist! And it's no big deal! A trans man! And it's no big deal! (Actually a deal is made of it for about half a page, and the person making a deal of it is a total jerk, and it totally crosses the line for everyone else). People exist and it doesn't change the story in any way because it's not about sex nor gender!

So honestly, if you're a Seanan McGuire fan, you already know you'll love this -- it's everything she does in a stand-alone, top-notch read. If you're new, then prepare yourself, because you are going to feel ALL the feels. Murder mystery in a boarding school was never so emotional! Especially with the paranormal elements.

I love the idea that the children who find the doorways -- the ones we've heard of, from The Door In The Hedge to Narnia (which is mocked, hah) to The Door In The Wall (which has stuck with me since I read it as a child) -- to magical lands, lands where they are wanted, where they finally fit in, where they live heroic or tragic lives... and for one reason or another come back to our world. Some voluntarily, others not -- but what the students here all share is that they want to find their doors again. They want to go home. This resonates on such a deep level, because I'm sure we all wanted to find a place of magic and adventure and be whisked away because we felt like we didn't belong.

This book made me cry. The descriptions of the doorways that were there, patiently waiting for their children to return, even after they've died. The sacrifices made in the name of love and family. The pain of waiting, of wishing, of wanting to belong again, of finding yourself returned to a world where you're a square peg in a round hole.

I highly recommend this story if you enjoy books by authors such as Robin McKinley, TJ Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon, or liked Naomi Novik's latest fantasy book. This was an instant comfort read for me, and is sticking around on my Kindle for re-reads in the future.

What happens to the teenagers whose portal worlds spit them back out again? YA, mild horror.

A door appears--a tiny door tucked into the porch railing that shrinks you when you open it, a rainbow door that leads you to a nonsense, rainbow world, a door that leads you to the land where Death is lord.

Every Heart a Doorway isn't a story about those portal worlds, but rather about what happens after, after the portal world becomes your home for years and then spits you back out into reality, where your parents think you've been kidnapped for months or years, and their home can never be your home. You're different now--the portal world has taught you how to be truly you.

These teens are sent to Eleanor's home for wayward children. Everyone in the home has been through a portal world, and everyone wishes to find their door again and return. Nancy is a new student whose portal world was where Death reigned. She's assigned to room with Sumi, a nonsense girl. This could be a new home for Nancy, but when a student dies, and then another, this new home is threatened, unless the students can figure out what's happening.

I loved the concept and the bizarre mental states of all the teens. The characters are oddly dissociative when the murders start happening, but then, that's not altogether surprising considering where they've been, and how they've had to adapt to a new way of being in their portal worlds. I'm definitely reading the next.

A cost-effective book

It is a really clear, didatic and objective book. In an easy way to comprehend, it scrutinizes all information about the production of polypropylene using vertical stirred-bed gas phase process. I bought the first one (PP production via Gas Phase Process) and felt really glad about it: great material; arrived right on time, no disappointments. It's the right choice for any chemical engineering professional, academic or decision maker!

About the Author
Jack Mayer is a pediatrician and a writer. He began practicing pediatrics in 1976 in Enosburg Falls, Vermont, a small town in eastern Franklin County on the Canadian border. His was the first pediatric practice in that half of the county. He was a country doctor there for ten years, often bartering medical care for eggs, firewood, and knitted afghans. From 1987 - 1991 Dr. Mayer was a National Cancer Institute Fellow at Columbia University School of Public Health in New York City, researching the molecular biology of childhood cancer. Most of his scientific writing was done during those four years. He was also an academic pediatrician at Columbia University's Presbyterian Medical Center.
Dr. Mayer returned to Vermont in 1991 and established Rainbow Pediatrics in Middlebury, Vermont where he continues to practice primary care pediatrics. He is an Instructor in Pediatrics at the University of Vermont School of Medicine and an advisor for pre-medical students at Middlebury College.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mayer has written short stories, poems, and essays about his years in pediatric practice and hiking The Long Trail in Vermont. He was a participant at Middlebury College's Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in 2003 and 2005 for fiction, and in 2008 for poetry. LIFE IN A JAR: The Irena Sendler Project is his first non-fiction book.
He lives in Middlebury, Vermont.

A Heartfelt Story of Courage

One person can make a difference. This was, and continues to be, Irena Sendler's message to the world, and Jack Mayer's Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project conveys that message in a heartfelt manner that grabs and engages the reader from beginning to end.

The book is a story of a Holocaust hero, plus one of Kansas students and their teacher. The world had not heard of Irena Sendler until a group of students in Bourbon County started a National History Day project. The book is called a "novel" on the cover, but more closely the book is a "non-fiction" novel. The author went to Kansas on two occasions while writing the book, and he also traveled to Poland with the Kansas teens and their teacher, spending time interviewing Irena Sendler and child survivors. Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project is based on the true story of Irena Sendler and the Kansas students who "rescued the rescuer's story for the world."

Jack Mayer's description of the constant fear and peril of Sendler's rescue of 2,500 children from sure death is vivid; the reader feels transported back to the ghetto as the suspense and difficulty of Irena's missions are described. Moreover, while the story of Irena's acts of bravery and heroism of rescuing children from the Warsaw ghetto is captivating, equally so are the acts of bravery the young women discovered within themselves to overcome personal obstacles in their lives while researching tirelessly to find information on Irena. Megan Stewart had to come to terms with her mother's breast cancer; Sabrina Coons had to come to terms with being part of a military family and frequently relocating; and Liz Cambers had to come to terms with her mother's abandonment when Liz was only five years old. Guiding the girls through their National History Day project and struggles was their history teacher Norm Conard, who with his dedication and encouragement, assisted them in eventually finding Irena. The young women's struggles reveal their vulnerabilities and move the reader to sympathize with the teens and cheer for their achievements.

The meeting in Poland that takes place among Irena, the Kansas teens, and their teacher is nothing short of a miraculous act of fate. The emotions are palpable, and the events leading up to their visit keep the reader captivated. Tears flowed from my eyes as I read about the love and admiration that were felt between Irena and each student when they met and between Mr. Conard and Irena herself. The incredible manner in which this true story unfolded underscores the power good still has in this world, as well as the influence people have when they help others.

Jack Mayer's book begins with the Kansas teens trying to develop their mission of "making a difference and repairing the world" through their National History Day project. By the end of the book, it is obvious they not only accomplished that goal but greatly exceeded it. Through their research about Irena and their close relationship with her, they made, and continue to make, a difference to an innumerable amount of people and repaired each other's lives. They most certainly will make a difference for anyone who reads their inspiring story.

A Riveting Book

Knowing the story of Irena Sendler, I looked forward to the publication of this book. I knew I would enjoy reading it but I was unprepared to be absolutely riveted by it. I took the book home planning to read a chapter or two but ended up reading it from cover to cover in one sitting. While I knew Irena's story, I did not know the story of the three Kansas girls and their history project. On so many levels, this is an amazing story - the impact of a teacher on the lives of three young girls, the power of historical research, the incredible work done by Sendler and the human touch across both generations and continents. When the young women finally met the subject of their research, Irena Sendler, all differences were transcended. It did not matter that they had grown up in rural Kansas decades after Sendler did her heroic work in Poland in the late 1930's. Irena Sendler's life, continuing to be so beautifully portrayed in the "Life in a Jar" play, provides inspiration by demonstrating that ordinary people can do great things.

Touching

I have always avoided feeling the pain of the Holocaust until I read Life in a Jar. I let myself cry through many pages, horrified at how human beings can treat other human beings. By the end, I was crying for a different reason--how Irena Sendler and some students and Jack Mayer made a difference, living and telling this story. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to feel the worst and the best of what we human beings are capable of doing and being. Don't expect to have dry eyes. Thank you, Irena Sendler for saving so many lives and Jack Mayer and students for bringing this story to the world.

Grade 5-8-Joe and Katie play a popular fantasy card game, DragonSteel, whenever and wherever they can. When Joe finds a computer game based on their favorite pastime, the two friends can't wait to try it out. They soon discover that it's not really a computer game, but instead a gateway into the world of Komondor, an alternate universe full of characters who look like "Japanimations" (Japanese-style cartoons with big hair, giant eyes, etc.). The youngsters must find all five pieces of the DragonSteel Amulet before an evil emperor uses them to take over Komondor and Earth. Written in a lighthearted tone and packed with amusing puns, this fast-paced adventure is filled with action that is over the top and enjoyable. The characters are shallow, but believable. DragonSteel closely resembles Pok‚mon or Yu-Gi-Oh, and will seem familiar to many readers. The black-and-white illustrations, which look like cookie-cutter Japanese anime, fit well with the narrative. Don't think too much while reading or you'll lose the moment. If you need fun fantasy books, and you already have the top-of-the-line authors (Douglas Adams, Roald Dahl, Dav Pilkey, Lemony Snicket, and Terry Pratchett), this is a good choice for second string.

Middle-school sweethearts Joe and Katie are thrilled when they find a CD-ROM version of DragonSteel, their favorite trading card game. It turns out that the CD is a portal to the DragonSteel world, a parallel universe where everyday life is just like a video game, including "PowerUp" bonuses and lifespan indicator orbs that hover over combatants during battles. Joe and Katie--transformed into Japanimation characters--must fulfill an ancient prophecy by reuniting the scattered pieces of a powerful amulet. Joined by another boy and girl, the adventurers face the usual beasts and evil enchanters but also less-exotic problems, such as a computer glitch that keeps shutting down their portal and typical junior-high worries about who likes whom. The characters are thinly developed and the illustrations unsophisticated, but there's appeal enough in Osterweil's spoof of genres near and dear to preteen boys. Jennifer Mattson

Transported into a world of dragons where the goal is to locate a five-piece amulet, the two travel a dangerous world in their leisure time, struggle with the questions of parents and friends when not at play - and wonder what will happen if they fail. The Amulet Of Komondor is a riveting story of a computer game gone awry.

if you like video games you will like this book. THe gmae is like a roleplaying game, and the characters get trapped in it. They need to complete the quest to get out. It's funny.

About the Author

Andrew Davidson is a financial innovator and leader in the development of financial research and analytics. He has worked extensively on mortgage-backed securities product development, valuation, and hedging. He is president of Andrew Davidson & Co., Inc., a New York firm specializing in the application of analytical tools to investment management, which he founded in 1992. He is co-author of the books Securitization: Structuring and Investment Analysis and Mortgage-Backed Securities: Investment Analysis & Valuation Techniques. He has also contributed to The Handbook of Mortgage-Backed Securities, Mortgage-Backed Securities: New Applications and Research, and The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics. He received an M.B.A. in Finance at the University of Chicago and a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics at Harvard University.

Alexander Levin is Director of Financial Engineering at Andrew Davidson & Co., Inc. He has developed innovative and efficient valuation models for mortgage-backed securities, including the Active-Passive Decomposition burnout model, the concept of prepay risk-and-option-adjusted valuation, and the method of Credit Option-Adjusted Spread and non-Monte Carlo shortcuts. This is an outstanding book for financial professionals, students and any individuals interested in MBS. While it is not a book for beginners, Andrew Davidson and Alex Levin have drawn on their collective experience and produced a book that is simultaneously innovative and instructive. It's clear that in addition to their strong basis of knowledge, a great deal of thought and original ideas went in to this book. Anyone who wants to move past the boilerplate, basic credit research to find something fresh should read this book. It's the future of mortgage valuation.
