If you're ready to end the dating phase of your life forever by finding your lifelong love, you're ready for: SpeedDating

With SpeedDating, a comprehensive dating guide, you'll speed through the dating phase of your life into a committed, lifelong relationship, avoiding go-nowhere entanglements and other dating pitfalls.

The dating-world myth that evaluating a relationship takes months and months -- or worse, years and years -- causes unnecessary emotional complications, heartache, and time spent in dead-end relationships. With this book in hand, you'll know before you invest your heart whether a relationship has a future. And when you fall in love, SpeedDating will help you determine if that love can last a lifetime. The SpeedDating process helps you find your lifelong love -- not a fleeting romance that leaves you back where you began -- single. SpeedDaters save the romance for the right relationship.

SpeedDating is best known for its fast, fun, 7-minute round-robin dating events, which have been featured in major media such as the New York Times and People. But the SpeedDating approach shared in this book takes you beyond the first date to help you reach your goal: marriage in the quickest possible time to a person you love who will cherish the real you forever.

Whether you're new to the dating scene, a veteran, or just returning, SpeedDating will put you on the fast track to a healthy, committed, lifelong relationship.

Don't Date Without This Book!
By A Customer
When you're ready to stop wasting time dating the wrong person, read this book. The Speeddating way is to ask your date the right questions early in the courtship to spot the red flags BEFORE you find yourself deeply involved with this person for the wrong reasons-reasons like convenience, security/lifestyle or simply because the sex is just too good! Asking targeted questions also helps you to discover your own core values and to search for a life partner who will share those values. The methodology outlined in this book significantly reduces the pain of dating. Believe me!
Reading this book gave me new insight into why I married my ex-husband. We were what the authors call "defaulters-those who become so enmeshed in a relationship before making a commitment that they never really know where dating ends and the relationship begins." After living together in college and then moving cross country together for his law school, we eventually felt obligated toward marriage. We'd joke that our grandchildren's running gag about us would be, "Our grandparents lived together for 30 years and were married for 3." So we ultimately married because we couldn't imagine living without each other-not because we were so deeply in love-but because our coupledom was such a comfortable and professional and economically sustaining habit and because everyone in our families treating us accordingly. It took this book to clarify the obvious: that dating is a process, dating is not the relationship. Based on a system of core values that started to emerge when we discussed having children, my ex and I couldn't have been more diametrically opposed in the areas of religion, lifestyle and balancing household responsibilities.
So, please, save yourself heartache and years of treading water in a wrong relationship. If you're not on the same page as your partner, it's because YOU didn't ask the right questions and align yourself with someone whose heart is in the same place as yours. You want to be with someone in whom you see greatness and who sees greatness in you. This book shows you how to take responsibility for who you really are and how to attract the partner who will help you realize your full potential.

Is this my soul mate?
By Rebecca of Amazon
"For someone seeking a meaningful and lasting relationship, today's dating scene can be brutal. You meet someone, begin dating, date more seriously, fall into a semi or full-time living-together arrangement-and then it doesn't work out, leaving one or both of you heartbroken."

If you are a hopeless romantic, you probably think you will simply find the right person and get married. Not to mention living happily ever after. But do you know the right questions to ask? This book is more about applying the fundamental skills of SpeedDating to your own relationships and is based on the tenets of Jewish philosophy and wisdom.

Speed Dating is about saving time in the dating process. If "What was I thinking" is your lament, then this book will provide the questions you should ask yourself, your date and others so you can evaluate your relationships more quickly before you commit hours of your time to a person you might really not be compatible with.

You will learn:

How to eliminate time-wasting, heartbreaking relationship habits
How to tell when you are "in love" and whether this will last
How to determine four levels of commonality with the person you are dating
How to accurately evaluate your date in the shortest amount of time
Tips for keeping dating productive as well as fun
Tools for discovering your date's true character

The following questions are discussed in Part 1:

1. What is my desired outcome?
2. How can I tell When I'm in Love?
3. Am I attracted to who people are or to what they have or what they can do for me?
4. What do we have in common - and does it matter?
5. What type of person do I enjoy giving to?
6. Am I reliving the same bad date over and over again.
7. Am I spending as much time in product development as I am in marketing?
8. What do I like and respect about myself?
9. Who is my team?
10. Do I trust this is going to work out - that I will find my soul mate?

Part 2 focuses on the SpeedDating way and includes "SpeedDating pacing"and more questions.

11. Do I enjoy being with this person?
12. What are my thoughts telling me - which should I listen to and which should I ignore.
13. Is this an action, or my interpretation of an action?
14. Is this relationship ready for physical intimacy?
15. What am I going to learn during this date?
16. Did my date pass the team screen?
17. How does my date behave when not on a date?
18. What challenges will this relationship have, and am I prepared to handle or live with these challenges long-term?

You will also find out how to recognize a "shaper," "avoider," "defaulter," and "cynic."

The section on chemistry is intriguing. There are aspects of love that cannot be expressed verbally.

"If love is a feeling that mysteriously appears and disappears, how can we ever be certain that it won't suddenly disappear?" pg. 16

I could appreciate the section on how a "giver" and a "taker" can result in a painful situation. The taker has strong expectations that everyone should give to him and the giver often wants appreciation and doesn't receive it. As they say, giving to a taker is extremely painful. I think we all want to be appreciated for the gifts we give.

The section on self-esteem was enlightening. Taking care of yourself physically and emotionally might also mean you are willing to be more aware of the needs of others.

Never doubt that the small things count. Like how much TV a person watches or if they are interested in their health.

The aspect of sexual relations is intriguing and from a Jewish perspective, physical intimacy is the merging of two souls. So, when you are intimate with someone your souls join and a part of each soul is exchanged. I also loved the chapter on Soul Mates. Do soul mates exist? Apparently a soul mate is the person who will help you reach your fullest potential, tolerate your flaws and love you for who you are.

I don't think you can fully appreciate what a soul mate is until you have found them. I'm of the opinion that soul mates appear when you are supposed to change into who you are becoming and they don't normally appear a minute sooner.

A book that tries to take the pain out of the dating game. It is based on the worldwide success of SpeedDating events.

A FUN TO READ BOOK WITH LOTS OF EXCELLENT DATING ADVICE.
By A Customer
I think this book is GREAT! I really enjoyed reading it a lot. The author's style is very easy to read and yet offers solid, practical advice about how to avoid the pitfalls of dating and making bad choices in today's dog eat dog singles world. Lots of great, interesting first hand accounts from both the authors and people they know. I think that this book is a MUST for all singles, whether you are 19 or 59, male or female, a religious person or a non-religious person - it doesn't matter. This book has something important to say to everyone. As a man, I feel I particularly benefited from the insights I got into women - better than the Mars-Venus stuff. My only question is: Why didn't they write this book years earlier when I started dating?! A top notch book that every single person should read.

This text records the problems given for the first 15 annual undergraduate mathematics competitions, held in March each year since 2001 at the University of Toronto. Problems cover areas of single-variable differential and integral calculus, linear algebra, advanced algebra, analytic geometry, combinatorics, basic group theory, and number theory. The problems of the competitions are given in chronological order as presented to the students. The solutions appear in subsequent chapters according to subject matter. Appendices recall some background material and list the names of students who did well.

The University of Toronto Undergraduate Competition was founded to provide additional competition experience for undergraduates preparing for the Putnam competition, and is particularly useful for the freshman or  sophomore undergraduate. Lecturers, instructors, and coaches for mathematics competitions will find this presentation useful. Many of the problems are of intermediate difficulty and relate to the first two years of the undergraduate curriculum. The problems presented may be particularly useful for regular class  assignments. Moreover, this text contains problems that lie outside the regular syllabus and may interest students who are eager to learn beyond the classroom.

I LOVE this book. Beautiful, colorful illustrations on glossy pages. This book has short to medium long stories, just right for bedtime with the kids. I have been enjoying reading these stories with my infant grandson and he shows keen interest in looking at the lovely illustrations as I read to him.

Can't Get Enough!
By ReviewingCorner
The Parker Siblings series is my favorite series. I anxiously awaited the release of this book and it didn't disappoint. In fact, Not Done is my favorite book in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone because it has something for everyone. This book is full of suspense, betrayal, and intrigue while also being funny. The one thing I would suggest is don't read the book until you have time to read it in one sitting. You won't want to put it down.

Best book of the series!
By Secretly Adorkable Readers
Holy obi wan kenobi batman! I freaking loved this book & probably my favorite of all. If I could give 10 Stars, not only this series but this book would deserve it!

Ok, so this is Cambree and Max's story. Cambree has flown the Parker nest and enrolled to college, trying to be the carefree bird being single, going to parties, getting drunk, making out with random strangers.

Cambree doesn't know Max's secret while working undercover to watch over her and also make sure Brent doesn't come near her while in college. Max doesn't give up and asks to meet her at a coffee shop and when they finally may have a second chance, Cambree gets hurt and sent to the hospital. When Cambree finally wakes up, she remembers the attack and also finds out that the Baird brothers were undercover trying to protect her the whole time. This breaks her heart and she feels betrayed and lied too once again.

"We are stubborn and fierce. We love hard, fight hard, but above all, we are family in every sense of the word. You wrong one of us; you hurt all of us. And that is not a pleasant place to be."~Brielle

Max is so broken hearted and thought he had his second chance with Cambree but when secrets are revealed, he has to work even harder and doesn't give up. Mitch and Max work together to wrap up this investigation up because they don't want any more secrets from his siblings and ready to tell them the truth and put this behind him. The Baird brothers thought they found the answers needed to put this to an end with Brent and make sure he is in prison for good but things get in the way once again. Max is beside himself because he thinks if things don't end soon, that it may be an end for him and Cambree as well.

"I am afraid I will always love him, and one thing I could never deny is that I do love him. It was almost instantaneous for me. Hook, line, and sinker with that boy." ~ Cambree

The whole time reading this book, I caught myself laughing so hard that I was literally crying. There are so many favorite quotes that were highlighted. I will read the full series once Dustin's book comes out in July. The ending of this one just broke my heart and I wanted to reach in and hug the Parker Siblings myself.

"I didn't realize how close he moved to me during his speech. I notice now because my breath is coming out in pants, I am so turned on by him, I don't know if I can speak, and all I want to do is pull him to me and let nature take its course." ~Cambree

I don't want to spoil this for you so I put down a few of my favorite quotes through this review. Leigh Ann is awesome! Thank you for letting me read this early before release.

"You love of life and family, your carefree attitude, and the way you always put others first is uniquely you. I wish you could see what everyone else sees...how we love you and admire you. Camy, you are one of a kind, not a replacement."~Max

We killed Earth. Thousands of years later, the survivors, having fled their dead planet in great generation ships, eak out a tenuous existence among the local group of stars. This could have been the end for the last dregs of humanity, but for the rise of a dictatorial theocracy that draws humankind under its wing and flogs it to prosperity. The new faith is mother, it is father and mentor to a star-spanning species, but it is also built on lies. Now, four heretics seek to throw off the shackles of the false church by finding the original Word of God. In their quest, they find not only the truth of words, but soul-changing truths of who they really are.

Space Opera! War! Religion! Clones?
By Janice
Sadly there are no clones to be had in this book. But Stephen Loy takes us on a theatrical journey into the future where Humanity is saved by the Mother Church. In the far flung future The Church must protect itself from heretics. Enter The Army of God. In the vein of Starship Troopers, the book not the movie, the Grunts of The Army of God are hard fighting power armored individuals in service to the church. Rooting out corruption, paying their pittance and being ever mindful of their place.
However all isn't as it seems as there is trouble in paradise.

This series does strike a fine balance between Military Jargon and Space Fluff. The story is important, but it's the conflict of the two main characters(sisters) that truly makes this a story to read. As both undergo a journey of discovery, self destruction and ultimately salvation. If you're into hard sci-fi you might not find much to your liking here. There is some Hard Sci-Fi but it's certainly well insulated by the Space Fantasy that tends to make up Space Opera's. And what Military Jargon is in the book does not over power you and leave you questioning what's going on. It add's just the right ambiance to the story.

Praise for the space opera
By Thomas Scott Farrell
At its best, science fiction holds a mirror to our own world, offering insight we otherwise might not see. At its worst, it can either delve into the depths of hokum or straddle the boundaries between science and pseudoscience with all the allure and grace of a refrigerator repair manual. In Shining Star, Stephan Loy creates a far flung, futuristic universe that isn't so dissimilar to ours. There are the faithful and the zealots, the weak and the warriors and those just surviving in between. As we've come to expect from a Loy novel, the characters are rich, the plot is thick, and the hook is deep. But what is important about this work are questions it asks of us in its wake, when the pages are turned and the story has cooled within us. And also the space ninjas.

Stephan Loy Does It Better
By James Wilber
When I first started reading this book, I was somewhat put off by the parallels to Star Wars. But as the story went on, I realized something. Stephan Loy, in his own sneaky way, was showing us how good Star Wars could have been. How it could have been a story where the villains have real motivations. How it could have been a story where the heroes had revelations and remorse.

I've gotten to know Steve Loy's writing through his books Isis Wept and Last Days and Times. He always creates characters that you can identify with. Even if they are sword-wielding god-fearing maniacs, he still includes a human element that we see reflected in ourselves.

He's also a craftsman storyteller, always spinning an entertaining yarn with excellent pacing and development. The plot never grows stale in a Stephan Loy joint.

Shining Star is another great an example of a book that makes you ask questions about yourself when you finish it. If the previous reviewer who gave the book one star actually finished it, they would have learned that the Shining Star is actually all about the transformative power of faith and the true message of the Bible.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1830 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. 1646--1660. Baxter resumes his Labours at Kidderminster--His account of Public Affairs till the Death of Charles I.--His conduct while in Kidderminster towards Parliament--Towards the Royal Party--His Ministry at Kidderminster--His Employments--His Success--His Advantages--Remarks on the style of his preaching--His public and private exertions--Their lasting effects. In the fourth chapter, a full account is given of the views and conduct of Baxter while he was connected with the victorious array of the Commonwealth. His exertions to promote its spiritual interests, were indefatigable and disinterested. With the most patriotic principles and aims, he devoted himself to counteract, what he considered the factious and sectarian dispositions of the soldiers and their leaders; while he experienced nothing but sorrow and disappointment as the fruit of his labours. His bodily health, always feeble andbroken, at length sunk under the pressure of his circumstances, and he was compelled reluctantly to retire from the stormy atmosphere of a camp to the calmer region of a pastoral cure. The preceding- chapter details the origin, character, and influence, of the principal and the minor religious parties which made a figure during the civil wars, or enjoyed an ephemeral notoriety during the Commonwealth. To all that concerned both the civil and religious interests of his country, Baxter was powerfully alive. He had the soul of a patriot as well as of a Christian; and often was he ready to weep tears of blood over the civil confusion and the religious distractions of his country. Yet were these halcyon days, in regard to the enjoyment of religious privileges, compared with those which preceded and followed them. After various digressions he...

I am grateful to God for this resource of wisdom.
By J. Cochran
Obviously, the most important book for a Christian is the Bible. And the more different versions of the Bible that one possesses, the better. Especially it is important to have highly accurate versions, such as the KJV, the NKJV, the NASB, the RSV (or the NRSV), and Greek-English Interlinears (again, the more of these, the better). Next, it is important to have a concordance, and dictionaries of Greek and Hebrew (and a Webster's dictionary, preferably an old one). The Word of God is the only pure source of faith, so I emphasize having a strong foundation in it.

Next to studying Scripture itself, and following the leading of the Spirit, one should seek the counsel of a good pastor, a wise and holy spiritual guide. Baxter is, from my own experience, an eminently fine choice for a pastor-at-a-distance. Do not let yourself be unnecessarily put-off by his archaic English, because he is actually easy to understand, and with just a little practice in archaic English, it becomes quite easy to understand.

Why do I like Baxter? Because I regard him as both very wise and very holy; he is a very safe pastor to follow, because he is very encouraging, yet he fosters such a healthy fear of sin and judgment, as to effectively frighten me away from sin; and he has such a hatred of sin, and such a love of holiness, as to effectively shame me away from sin; and because he has such a love for God, that he effectively helps me to see the goodness of God, that I may delight in Him also. Baxter is an exceptionally safe choice for a spiritual guide in today's age, because he does not condone sin in any form, as so many modern ministers are guilty of doing (and that without shame and fear). He is uncompromisingly righteous. He is severe, in coming against sin, because he sees the wickedness of it, and the onslaught of destruction that follows in its wake. He is effective because he is so genuine. He believes firmly in what he writes, and so he feels the truth of what he writes, and that conviction comes through compellingly to the reader. He is also effective because he is so persuasive. He leads one on, through reason, and makes the Christian life appear to be the only logical way, in a world of madness. Logic is his primary tool, yet he plies it in a warm, heart-felt way, which is certain to persuade the humble of the perfect reasonableness of the Christian life. He was a man of one book,--the Bible, so he was not excessively attached to any one group of believers, so as to parrot their "orthodox" doctrines, but he was orthodox, in the sense of holding to the primary tenets of the primitive church. Though he was a scholar's scholar, having written an amazing amount of literature, all of which is good, yet he was also a pastor's pastor, because he was also extremely successful at converting and shepherding his flock in Kidderminster.

Though many of his works are very excellent, I think that if you were to read only one, that it should be the first part of "A Christian Directory," which is basically a catechism of Christianity, to lead one to Christ, and then lead one by the hand, to show one how to live a holy life, and safely arrive in heaven. It is a manual of how to effectively live in Christ, and be victorious in all things. I cannot think of anyone safer to lead me, than Richard Baxter. Knowledgeable and devout Calvinists and Arminians alike, and those Christians who are neither, recognize the judiciousness, the sincerity, and the holiness of Baxter, though he cannot be rightly claimed by any single party, any denomination, as being exclusively their own (he actually had many enemies, though he diligently strove for reconciliation among the various religious parties that seemed unconcerned about unnecessarily dividing the church). Though many Christians during the last 333 years have not been in exact agreement with him on all aspects of theology, yet they recognized that he was a master of the way of Christ, and his intensely practical writings have been of great help to them (and me),--to warm my cold heart, to cultivate a right love for God and others, and to hate sin. I believe that if you were to follow the directions in this book, then you would very safely live in this life, and very safely arrive at your desired destination, after this life.

Baxter has an exceptionally clear view of eternity, which to me is such an abstract concept, and difficult to see, because this life, and the things of this world, tend to block my vision, and keep me from appreciating eternal matters; yet for him, it was as if he was continually peering into the vastness of eternity, and had somewhat grasped its importance, which enabled him to see the relative vanity of this "short inch of time," and keep everything in its proper perspective. I attribute this to the fact that he was sickly throughout his life, and was constantly faced with imminent death; he wrote, "I preached, as never sure to preach again, and as a dying man to dying men." No one takes spiritual matters, such as one's relationship with God, and one's probable eternal state, as seriously as a dying man does. No one can so feelingly appreciate the goodness of God and heaven, as well as someone who sees that he is just about to enter into eternity, and no one can see the odiousness of sin, as well as those that see that sin can ruin their chances of gaining heaven, and instead sentence them to eternal misery. Our problem does not generally lie in not knowing the truth, but rather in not truly believing the truth, and therefore in not having the benefit of truly feeling the power of the truth. It is very possible, and very common, to know a truth intellectually, and yet to seldom be mindful of it. Are you so mindful of the transitoriness of this short life, and your soon impending death and judgment, that you can seemingly taste your own mortality, and see yourself clearly, with your mind's eye, standing before the judgment bar of Christ, the holy and just Judge, from whom nothing is hidden, and who is no respecter of persons? Or is this all rather blurry and hazy to you, as your dreams at night usually are, when you are asleep?

Next to Scripture, and aids in understanding Scripture, I recommend this book, A Christian Directory. We cannot always listen to an effective pastor, but we can always read the writings of an effective pastor. Bless yourself, by acquainting yourself with Baxter, and let him become a close friend to you. Such a shame that the book is out of print! You can read this book online, by going to the CCEL website, and downloading it as a PDF document, and saving it to your own computer, for future reference. If you do not have the patience to read through the large first part of the book, Christian Ethics (the most necessary part of the book to know), then it may still be of great use to you, as a reference, because the Table of Contents is extremely detailed. Other books by Baxter that I have read, with much profit: The Saint's Everlasting Rest; A Treatise of Conversion; and, A Treatise of Self-Denial; all excellent. I hope to see you on the other side.

puritan casuistry
By Christopher Engelsma
This book contains a staggering amount of information. Baxter begins by leading the person to Christ, and then he teaches him/her how to be an established and strong Christian. Further topics cover how one may profitably use the Sacraments, conduct family worship, educate children, engage in controversy, go to law. There is also a host of questions on matter relating to the church; how to know the true church, what makes a church true, is the Roman Catholic church a true church, etc. Baxter places heavy emphasis on training the mind in sound doctrine. He also recommends the use of catechisms. Perhaps not a book that you would read straight through, but one that you could certainly consult with great benefit. Far superior to anything written today. Delightful reading.

Puritan Reformed Counsel on every subject of life
By Stratiotes Doxha Theon
This resources is packed with insight on advice for every trouble in life imaginable. A collection of the experienced pastor-teacher's insights for other pastors. Baxter lived the life of the servant-pastor and knew what worked and what did not for those God loves so much. He also knew the condition of all men's hearts and spoke to that as well. Everyone interested in Biblical counselling will find this book useful and handy as a reference.

How Life Imitates Chess: Making the Right Moves, from the Board to the Boardroom, by Garry Kasparov

Garry Kasparov was the highest-rated chess player in the world for over twenty years and is widely considered the greatest player that ever lived. In How Life Imitates Chess Kasparov distills the lessons he learned over a lifetime as a Grandmaster to offer a primer on successful decision-making: how to evaluate opportunities, anticipate the future, devise winning strategies. He relates in a lively, original way all the fundamentals, from the nuts and bolts of strategy, evaluation, and preparation to the subtler, more human arts of developing a personal style and using memory, intuition, imagination and even fantasy. Kasparov takes us through the great matches of his career, including legendary duels against both man (Grandmaster Anatoly Karpov) and machine (IBM chess supercomputer Deep Blue), enhancing the lessons of his many experiences with examples from politics, literature, sports and military history.

With candor, wisdom, and humor, Kasparov recounts his victories and his blunders, both from his years as a world-class competitor as well as his new life as a political leader in Russia. An inspiring book that combines unique strategic insight with personal memoir, How Life Imitates Chess is a glimpse inside the mind of one of today's greatest and most innovative thinkers.

Amazon.com Review
In his 22-year reign as Grandmaster, Garry Kasparov faced more than a few tough choices under the heat of chess competitons. This is a man who knows a thing or two about making smart decisions, and since his retirement in 2005, Kasparov has put his powerful strategic thinking to work in business and politics, showing that a simple reliance on instincts can guide you through even the most complex challenges. With no shortage of wit or eloquence, he's answered our hardest questions about what factors can make or break a decision-making moment. --Anne Bartholomew

Questions for Garry Kasparov

Amazon.com: Why do you think decisiveness is such an elusive skill for people to master? Are there simply too many choices? What’s a good first step for negotiating your options?

Kasparov: It’s true that today we are faced with greater complexity in almost every aspect of our lives, from global competition in the business world to more options for entertainment. The connected world has flooded us with a limitless supply of data, and equally limitless choices. One of the problems this has created is that it creates the illusion, or delusion, that we can achieve perfection in our decisions by accumulating more information. It’s too easy to blame faulty decisions on imperfect information, but information is always limited in some way, as is the time available to make our decisions. Forget perfection! Decisiveness comes from the courage to trust your instincts. The more you trust, the more you’ll build up that intuition and the more accurate it will become, creating a positive cycle.

Before you lay out your options, what we might call considering your next move, you have to have a solid understanding of the present. Evaluation is more important than calculation. Rushing into narrowing things down to a list of options is itself a form of making a choice -- and if you do that, you can prematurely rule out important possibilities. Stop looking ahead for a moment and examine the current state of affairs. Good decisions come from a solid understanding of all the factors that come into play. Once you have tuned your evaluation skills and learned to put the options on hold for a moment you’ll often find that difficult decisions become obvious.

Amazon.com: Taking a holistic view of your career, do you recall the moment you identified your talent for thinking strategically? Is it possible for you to separate that sense of yourself from your identity as a chess champion?

Kasparov: In the world of competitive chess, or any sport for that matter, everything is relative. Your results tell you about your talent. How can you identify a talent that goes untested? That’s one reason I’m so passionate about trying new things and about encouraging others to leave their comfort zones. I was fortunate in that my status as world champion brought me into contact with world leaders, top executives, authors, and other luminaries. I very much enjoyed these exchanges, learning about these other worlds. It also gave me the chance to share my own thoughts, something I’ve never been shy about doing. I’m sure they had to humor my impetuousness on occasion! But often they encouraged me and I discovered I had a knack for making unusual connections, a way of seeing the big picture that wasn’t limited to the chessboard.

Until my retirement from chess in March 2005 it would have been nearly impossible for me to separate myself from my chess identity--other than love for family and friends. But since then I have moved into several entirely different worlds. I’m at the table as a politician, or writing editorials, or lecturing about strategy and intuition in front of business audiences. My former chess career still precedes me in these settings, but they aren’t humoring me anymore! Actually, the biggest step was working on this book, which forced me to consider the mechanics of my own mind beyond chess. I had to ask myself if I really had something to offer and then figure out how to express it concretely. The positive reactions of my lecture audiences also helped in this regard.

Amazon.com: Playing chess competitively no doubt requires huge reserves of passion, patience, and discipline. For those readers who haven’t experienced the kind of rigorous training that competitive chess imparts, can you recommend some good ways to practice strategic thinking?

Kasparov: We all do it every day, the difference is that it takes discipline to become aware of it. In the book I ask the reader to consider all the significant decisions they made that day, that week. You don’t have to be a chess player or an executive to benefit from improving your decision- making process. We make hundreds of decisions just to get through each day. A handful are important enough to keep track of, to look back on critically. Were they successful? Why or why not? We can train ourselves, which is really the only way.

Amazon.com: Did you ever find during a particularly difficult match that it was hard to prevent your emotions from clouding your decision-making ability? What was your strategy for coping with stress or anxiety in that kind of situation?

Kasparov: Emotion is a critical element of decision-making, not a sin always to be avoided. As with anything it is harmful in excess. You learn to focus it and control it the best you can. I’m a very emotional person in and out of chess so this was always a challenge for me. When I sat down at the board against my great rival, Anatoly Karpov, it was a special occasion. I knew it, he knew it, and we both knew the chess world was paying special attention. We had such a long and bitter history that it was impossible not to bring it to the board with us every time we played.

On some occasions this anxiety created negative emotions like doubt. More often it generated greater creative tension, greater supplies of nervous tension, which is a chess player’s lifeblood.

Usually when you are under stress there is a good reason for it. Learning not to get anxious about things beyond your control is a separate issue. So don’t fight stress, use it! Channel that nervous energy into solving the problems. Sitting around worrying isn’t going to achieve anything and the loss of time will often make the problem worse. Even in the worst case, mistakes of action teach you much more than inaction. Forward!

Amazon.com: If you could choose five people, living or dead, to play you in chess, who would they be?

Kasparov: Don’t you know I have retired as a chess player? Well, I will go with you to the middle with two and a half opponents.

4th world chess champion Alexander Alekhine (d. 1946) was my childhood chess idol. The book of his collected games was my constant companion. He was a player of limitless imagination and combativeness. Some aspects of his pre-WWII-era chess would be considered antique today, but his talent is timeless. Just sitting at the board with him to analyze and share ideas would be like a youthful dream made real.

My next player requires a change of date as well, since I am now retired. In the period of 2001-2002 I felt I deserved a rematch against Vladimir Kramnik, who took my title in 2000. I was still the top-rated player in the world, the obvious top challenger. So I would choose a 16-game match against Kramnik--in 2002.

Last on my list is a chessplayer who is most definitely dead. Even if chess has by now passed it by, I would take a tiebreaker match against Deep Blue. I won our first match; the machine won the second. Then IBM made sure there would be no chance for a rematch. This time everything would be out in the open, no black boxes. Of course chess machines are considerably stronger today. It would still be pleasant to gain revenge and set the record straight.

From Publishers Weekly
With millions of serious chess players and Kasparov a regular in international news headlines, a business manual by the champion-turned-activist seems a no-brainer. Kasparov discusses each element of chess and strains to find parallels in life and the boardroom. Yet the book is surprisingly serious and readable, even if those who persevere won't necessarily be convinced that chess is an ideal laboratory for the decision-making process. While offering real insight into the game, Kasparov offers somewhat less into general decision making, urging readers to be aware of your routines, then break them and emphasizing both precise calculation and intuition and optimism. The author's attempts at chess metaphor are often a stretch: after all, chess matches are one-on-one and win-lose-draw, resembling war far more closely than anything in the boardroom. In fact, Kasparov's examples more often come from the battlefield than from business. Without a more direct business connection, his advice reverts to platitudes (To achieve success, our strategy must be implemented with accurate tactics). More engaging are the author's autobiographical anecdotes about his face-off against IBM's Deep Blue computer and his 2005 transition to becoming a full-time member of the Russian political opposition movement. Kasparov fans will find much to enjoy, but serious business readers should look elsewhere. (Oct.)

An Intriguing Book Showing The Correlations Between Business & Chess For Ruminating & Incisive Minds
By ZyPhReX
How Life Imitates Chess by former World Chess Champion and grandmaster Garry Kasparov does an incisive job of showing how life is a mirror for chess. Or is it the opposite?

Filled with much erudition regarding the intricacies of life, How Life Imitates Chess sifts through the data points, or perhaps ‘life-lessons’ is a better term, which helped him grow as a chess player that became a grandmaster, but more importantly, as an individual. Each of these life-lessons helped him grow in countless ways, regardless whether it was facing dismal defeats, or manifesting intensely resounding victories.

To that effect, Kasparov makes it a point to go into why constant self-analysis is essential not only to survive in the world, but in fact to thrive. Self-awareness and peak performance go hand in hand, as some of you may know. Because of this Kasparov urges everyone to become conscious of their individual inherent decision making process and strive to polish it to become wiser.

Some of the varying components featured in the book are the myriad fascinating stories of individuals, chess matches, companies et al., which are used to drive home lessons to be gleaned from the events that took place within those instances.

Another notable point mentioned in the book is the importance of not becoming your own enemy. In one instance, the author noted how it’s important to find the nascent stage of a crisis before it becomes a full-fledged crisis. This might seem obvious at first blush, but we’ve all seen our mental state – or that of someone else – be overridden by emotions, which therein overrides our logic. And not being able to use logic is downright disastrous since your mental precision is only a shade of its true power.

Furthermore, when an individual get emotional, not only does the amygdala go into overdrive, but “…the logic center processors [neocortex] get almost turned off and blocked. Adrenaline, hormone levels, and blood pressure rise, and our memories become less efficient. We begin to lose our ability to communicate effectively, and we turn to a form of autopilot to make decisions.”[Emphasis Added][1]

Hands down, my favorite part of the book, although admittedly there were many intriguing points, was how Kasparov relentless speaks about having to question everything. As he warns:

“Question the status quo at all times, especially when things are going well. When something goes wrong, you naturally want to do better the next time, but you must train yourself to want to do it better even when things go right.”[135][Bold Emphasis Added][2]

This reminds me of poker, as well as many other things in life, where a person might make the most ridiculous and stupid choice, and still get rewarded. If an individual chooses not to question their actions, they will simply not grow. Someone may make a very poor choice, and still end up winning untold sums of money. When such is the case, individuals rarely if ever opt for introspection to verify that they were correct. The assumption is that if the money is won…then the choice ‘had to’ be a good one. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Moreover:

“Questioning yourself must become a habit, one strong enough to surmount the obstacles of overconfidence and dejection. It is a muscle that can be developed only with constant practice.”[3]

Another additional point brought up by Kasparov was about the vital significance not only to move out of our comfort zones, but also to challenge ourselves in creative ways to push us into new boundaries.

Regarding this, Kasparov minces no words:

“When we regularly challenge ourselves with something new – even something not obviously related to our immediate goals – we build cognitive and emotional “muscles” that make us more effective in every way. If we can overcome our fear of speaking in public, or of submitting a poem to a magazine, or learning a new language confidence will flow into every area of our lives Don’t get so caught up in “what I do” that you stop being a curious human being. Your greatest strength is the ability to absorb and synthesize patterns, methods, and information. Intentionally inhibiting the ability to focus too narrowly is not only a crime, but one with few rewards.”[4]

This book almost has shades of being a self-help book, almost. The book isn’t that, but it’s so versatile, and the book harpoons so many little nuggets of knowledge that it can certainly be used as such a tool.

In plainspeak, if you’re looking for a book that delves into Chess, Life, Business, while also searching for gems of wisdom that may help you become a sharper, stronger, and more intuitive individual, but also dives into the importance of quality actions via precise decision making, then ruminate upon this book.

A big fan of Garry am I
By Keith Halonen
So I read this book even though I am not such a big fan of "the boardroom." Poor Garry has been getting himself arrested lately for being the leader of Russia's opposition party. Did he not see those photos of Putin barechested and packing heat? That could have been interpreted as a clue. I understand he's left the country to live somewhere else in one of the world's 180+ nations that accord (relative) freedom to its citizenry. This book is incisive and though many authors and pundits have drawn analogies between the decisions and actions that characterize great chess play and those that shape history in the real world, I am impelled to insist that the one thing that benefits most – above all others – from keen chess savvy... is chess. An 18-inch board with 64 squares and six different types of interacting "characters" can hardly be compared to the complexities of living life. Granted that many players, like Garry Kasparov and Bobby Fischer and Ludek Pachman (just to name a very few) become politically involved in a dramatic way. Chess, as its conducted at the world-class level, is intensely characterized by political intrigues, and many great players are paid to endorse chess products (computers, sets, books) just like athletes in the more physical sports, and – yes – chess has been the artificial intelligence benchmark for computer programmers for decades. But it certainly doesn't stand alone as a template for understanding and coping with life. Greatly admire the author. Humbled by his chess prowess. The book was OK. Well worth the read.

defeats Waitzkin's "Art Of Learning," narrowly
By Patrick Moore LMT Educator
Both "How Life Imitates Chess" and "Art of Learning" are written by men of similar experience about similar topics. Both winners in chess took their experiences to become winners in other arenas. Both now speak and coach corporations and businesses in success strategies.

While Waitzkin's book is more exciting because of the blow-by-blow writing style, and exciting battles in martial arts, I think Kasparov's book has more lasting value because of this one difference: Waitzkin recommends success by finding what you are good at, and putting yourself in more positions where your strengths will shine. Kasparov recommends success by taking honest inventory of what you are not good at, and putting the most effort into your weaknesses for better overall balance. I believe our world needs more of the second approach as I will point out below.

Both books completely ignore the idea of cooperation. In every example, these two experts tell us how to vanquish the enemy. I personally have no enemies. My business does not depend on competition. I win when others win. This idea is not even hinted at in either book. One might jump to the conclusion that chess helps people who are competitive, but leaves a hole where your cooperative skills would be.

Both authors could learn from Benjamin Franklin who played chess frequently. Franklin was a genius in many arenas, many we are still learning as pointed out in "Benjamin Franklin's Numbers" by math teacher Paul Pasles. We may assume that Franklin might have been the world champion at chess if he had felt the urge to competition. But even during the war, he did not view England as an adversary, nor the States as a winner at someone's expense, but often said that American independence would be good for the whole world, England included. Our earth is too small, now, to continue thinking competitively. In Franklin's own words,

"moderate your desire of victory over your adversary, and be pleased with one over yourself. Snatch not eagerly at every advantage offered by his unskilfulness or inattention; but point out to him kindly, that by such a move he places or leaves a piece in danger and unsupported; that by another he will put his king in a perilous situation, etc. By this generous civility ... you may, indeed, happen to lose the game to your opponent; but you will win what is better, his esteem, his respect, and his affection, together with the silent approbation and goodwill of impartial spectators."
