A wonderful introduction to evolution for the young!

I read this book to my third grade son and it has been such a huge help. He has been asking a lot of questions about evolution and I was having a hard time explaining it to him on his level. This book introduces the idea of the wide variety of species living on this planet; theories on how life first formed; and walks the reader through the fossil record of our planet. It does all of this simply and with the format of a child's picture book. The illustrations are beautiful and captivating but remarkable simple. Perfect for 7 to 10 year olds.

FABULOUS book!!

FABULOUS book introducing the evolution of the earth and all its life forms! Perfect for children pre-k through all of the elementary school years (and parents too!). This book mentions Charles Darwin, the Galapagos Islands, survival of the fittest, variation and mutation, extinction, and more. Nice pictures. Highly recommended for homeschoolers.

great introduction to natural selection

I'm always on the look-out for engaging, informative books on the development of life on earth. My kids and I have actually read quite a few of them. I consider this book one of the better ones for young kids. It does not speak down to kids, nor is it too complicated. The illustrations are Eric Carle-esque with their paper designs and interesting to young ones.

This books begins with first bacteria and progresses through the emergence of human life. However, it does not cover the process of human development at all. It simply says that modern humans appeared on earth 130,000 years ago. I was a little disappointed by this book's lack of detail in the area of human development. If you are looking for a book to introduce human evolution to kids, this one is not for you. If you simply want to introduce Darwinism and the survival of the fittest concept--this book is great.

Honestly as long as you do the assessments for every section you'll probably do just fine on the test

This helped a lot for taking the Ohio FE. Honestly as long as you do the assessments for every section you'll probably do just fine on the test, just work fully through all of those problems, and more importantly practice with an open pdf of the reference document you'll have to use on your computer as you work the problems. Knowing where to find equations is probably 80% of the difficulty because equations are scattered all over the place and the notation is weird and not consistent with what normal convention is. Just buy it, it's worth it to get it done right.

Great way to study. I loved being able to set a study schedule.

This review guide helped me immensely to study for the FE Mechanical Test. It helps you set up a study schedule depending on how much time there is until you have to take the test, and I think that was the biggest help for me. I hate studying, but with a set schedule, it was much easier.
I would also recommend buying Lindeburg's FE Mechanical Practice Problems. There are many practice problems in the Review Manual, but completing the additional practice problems will for sure make it hard to fail the test. Just make sure you can do the problems confidently while using the FE Reference Handbook.

Cons: Some of the practice problems seemed kind of out of left field, and I spent a lot of time trying to figure them out. But, the questions offered in the book are difficult on purpose to to help prepare you for the test. The test isn't nearly as difficult.

Thorough, but it includes material that isn't in the mechanical engineering FE?

I just spent the past 4 hours trying to wrap my head around a bunch of probability and statistics topics including: Hypothesis Testing, Confidence Levels, and Expected Values. There are several pages in this book covering those topics and a bunch of examples which is great except for one tiny problem... they wont' be in the Mechanical FE. I just found out that on the NCEES website, you can look up what topics your specific engineering discipline exam will be covering. The Probability and statistics portion for the mechanical is rather light and only includes distributions, regression and curve fitting. So what makes this book specific to the ME discipline? Also, the hypothesis portion of the book is dreadful and rushed and gives a rushed answer that reminds me of myself in Calculus when I knew the correct answer because my TI-89 spit out the right answer, but I looked like an idiot trying to explain how I got that answer. So I'll leave you with this bit of advice; make sure you don't split hairs trying to figure learn the stuff that won't be on the ME test. Be sure to go to the NCEES website and look for the mechanical specification details to see what is actually on the exam.
