About the Author
Among other things, Dede is Italian. Her grandparents came from Capracotta, Italy in 1913 through Ellis Island and the ship’s manifest clearly states that they were not anarchists. Neither is she, but she is an artist. After over twenty years as a public school art teacher, Dede left the classroom to direct the California Arts Project at San Jose State University. She left the suburbs to settle in a vintage San Francisco home where she entertains friends and family on her garden roof deck. She is active in the Aquatic Park Neighbors, volunteering her time and talents. Dede can frequently be seen in the mornings trudging up the hills of North Beach with her walking buddies looking for inspiration or having coffee in the local cafes. Harvey describes himself as a recovering bureaucrat. After almost 30 years in public service, when the kids left home and the dog died, he and his wife Sandy pulled up stakes and left the suburbs behind. After much soul-searching they decided that the big city was for them. Not just any big city, but San Francisco. After more than a decade in “Bagdad by the Bay” it still seems fresh and new to them. From the beginning Harvey had a passion for local history, lore and mythology of San Francisco. His interest led him to City Guides (sfcityguides.com), an all volunteer organization that leads walking tours throughout San Francisco. For several years he has been giving visitors an insider’s view of his North Beach neighborhood. “I want our readers to know” he recently said “that this book is a labor of love and I hope they will forgive any oversights or liberties I’ve taken in the text about people and places”. For as Voltaire said “All the ancient histories…are just fables that have been agreed upon.”

Alleyways

An outstanding and visually exciting book that provides a historical and visual look into North Beach life. The map was especially useful in walking to each site -- a fun way to spend part of a day (with book clutched in hand). For those who live too far away to search out these alleyways, the written descriptions and watercolor paintings bring to life the city's colorful past and lively present.

She works through contemporary European films that foreground migration, with the goal of describing each film's view of 'fortress Europe.' Loshitzky returns to Bernardo Bertolucci in Besieged (1998), while picking out Godardian elements in both Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine (1995) and Michael Winterbottom's 'Camp Trilogy' (In This World, Code 46, The Road to Guantanamo). The Real Secrets to Student Motivation

Confession: I'm a Larry Ferlazzo follower. Not a disciple, because Larry isn't much into that, but a follower who's read most of his essays and books on good teaching practice, including several I edited for the Education Week Teacher website. I've also interviewed Larry for a blog I help with. I've had dinner with Larry and his wife and fascinating conversation ensued. I loved his earlier book on parent engagement. So that's my transparency.

Here's the thing about Larry: He doesn't just get outside the box, he turns it INSIDE OUT. This excellent book is a good example. There are 100s of motivational books and articles you could buy and read, and when you boil most of them down, they're about external motivators -- rewards, guilt, atta-boy/girl strategies. They may work for a small number of students but they're not very sticky. Very few advice-givers take Larry's approach to motivation, with the teacher or advisor acting in ways that promote and nurture INTRINSIC motivation, the kind that begins to hang out in the adolescent brain/heart and eventually takes up full-time residency. Yes, it takes more effort on the part of the teacher/advisor -- but it's not wasted effort, like so many other approaches turn out to be.

In his hugely popular blog for educators, Larry is famous for his "How Do You..." posts (if you don't know about that blog, set aside a few hours to visit [...]). "Helping Students Motivate Themselves" uses the same how-to approach. It has two parts, Classroom Culture and Classroom Instruction, populated by 13 practical chapters presented as Questions, with specific, action-oriented answers. Take Question 5: "How do you help students see problems as opportunities, not frustrations?" The best teacher textbook I've read in years!

I'm reading this as part of an online class through Heritage Institute. Wow! This is great stuff . As teachers we spend a lot of time trying to motivate our students. We do all the work. This book shows how to put that responsibility back on the students to motivate themselves and teaches them how to do that. It goes on to talk about Higher Level Thinking, games and technology. It's easy to read and has good lesson plans as well as online links. I wish I had read it years ago.

As a veteran teacher and author of, Our Kids: Building Relationships in the Classroom, building relationships with kids is my stock-in-trade. It is how I survive the day with the coming-of-age-crew. Larry Ferlazzo's book is a great way to do just that. This is a well written classroom resource that gives some real insights and tangible lesson ideas to help kids become authentic learners and take true ownership of their educational careers. I applaud Mr. Ferlazzo's book and his genuine love of kids. Giving a child's education sort of back to themselves is the best way to build a closer and more effective community of learners.

Best book to help with co-teaching

If you are co-teaching with paras, special ed/general ed, or pre-service teachers, this book is a MUST. Everything seems to be included in this book from how to set up the layout of classrooms, various types of interventions that are possible with multiple adults in the room, and helpful explanations of special education terminology and such.

If you are in a position in your corporation that you can help improve co-teaching approaches this book is a good addition to use along with other books on co-teaching approaches. It should be a must read for administrators that influence the operation and implementation of co-teaching models. Almost every case study in the book has the reader thinking "wow, that is just like our situation" or "wow, we should have addressed the issue in this manner" or "wow, I should have asked that question." We are planning on using this book with our principals and as we start to include co-teaching training with our new teacher staff members.

Industry Standard Reference on LTE - Everything you need to know

As a field applications engineer working in the field of test and measurement, I was looking for a book to effectively bring me up to date on the latest standards in LTE testing. My own background cover RF, digital modulation techniques, and other standards, so I came into this book with a base of knowledge to expand into LTE. I make that statement because if you are a casual reader or "just interested", this book is definitely not for you. If you just want a survey of LTE technology, it is provided in Chapter 1, but that is merely 11 of the 400 pages in this tome. For basic knowledge, just google LTE.

If you are a serious student looking to understand the technology, where it stands today, its future limits, and how it is implemented, then look no further than this comprehensive work on LTE. It is already the industry standard, and likely to be the desk reference for any engineer working on LTE. Whatever can be explained in clear english is explained that way, including many diagrams and illustrations to illuminate the text.

The book covers basics of OFDM modulation techniques, equalization, multi-antenna techiniques, link adaptation, scheduling, LTE architeture, and physical transmission concerns. Indeed, an engineer working in LTE must be concerned with everything from antenna design to data formatting to spectral emission shape, and this book covers each of these topics in turn.

On top of everything, there is a well-organized index if you need to jump around the book, a list of abbreviations and acronyms, and a comprehensive list of references for further reading. As with all Academic Press books in this series (see my review on MIMO), it is well bound and will stand up to lots of reading.

If your job description includes (or if you are looking for a job that will include) LTE, buy this book. If you are an interesed amateur, save your money and get some free education on the web first.

Good coverage of the lower layers of LTE

This book does a good job covering the lower layers of LTE from the antenna up to the RLC. I wish it had more detail in the upper layers and the overall network especially the Enhanced Packet Core. It also lacks much material on the security aspects of LTE. I also wish it mentioned how carriers are adopting LTE and migrating EDGE and 3G to LTE. I also felt like the font was too small and made reading for long periods difficult

In short this is a good book if your interest is geared towards learning the physical and link layer aspects of LTE.

Excellent technical resource and foray into mobile communications

This book's main focus is on mobile communication 3G up to LTE (4G) and in particular radio access network (RAN). This is written by experts in this field (Ericsson) who are personally involved in the telecommunications design.

This book starts with a good overview of the telecommunications technology changes starting from GSM, leading to evolution of 4G / LTE. Basics such as spectrum allocation, link adaptation, radio interface architecture, access procedure relating to LTE cell search down to PHY level such as multi antenna techniques are covered. Where necessary, simple mathematical representations or computations, such as bandwidth utilization, channel capacity are shown. It briefly provides a simple overview of the core network (CN) component of system architecture evolution (SAE).

With an engineering background on 802.11, the mathematical coverage on OFDM and single carrier transmission appeals to me.

And for topics such as the access procedure for LTE cell search, it first lists the sequences, which is (1) Acquisition of frequency and symbols synchronization to cell,(2)Acquisition of frame timing of cell, which is determining the start of the downlink frame (3) Determination of physical layer CELL ID of cell. From here, it further delves into the specifics, providing tons of technical background and information. This is the approach used throughout the book, starting with general background information and ending with more technical details.

At times, I find the information too overwhelming for someone not involved in mobile communications design. However, this book remains a good resource both for novices and experts. I do highly recommend this book.

The field of organic electronics has seen a steady growth over the last 20 years. At the same time, our scientific understanding of how to achieve optimum device performance has grown, and this book gives an overview of our present-day knowledge of the physics behind organic semiconductor devices. Based on the very successful first edition, the editors have invited top scientists from the US, Asia, and Europe to include the developments from recent years, covering such fundamental issues as:

• growth and characterization of thin films of organic semiconductors
• charge transport and photophysical properties of the materials as well as their electronic structure at interfaces, and
• analysis and modeling of devices like organic light-emitting diodes, photovoltaic cells or field-effect transistors.

About the Author
Wolfgang Bruetting, University of Augsburg. Professor Brutting received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Bayreuth in 1995 with a work on charge transport in one-dimensional charge-density wave systems. He then moved to the field of organic semiconductors where he could take part in the development of organic light-emitting devices for display applications. In 2003 he became Professor for Experimental Physics at the University of Augsburg. His current research activities include thin film growth, photophysics and electrical transport in organic semiconductor devices.

Chihaya Adachi, Kyushu University in Japan. Professor Adachi worked at Chitose Institute of Science and Technology until he joined the Center for Future Chemistry as a Professor. He is heading the Division for Optical Functional Materials which research activities on organic optical electronics range from the synthesis of organic semiconductor materials to the development of devices and the clarification of properties.

Russell J. Holmes is Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. His research is primarily focused on the study of thin films and single crystals of organic materials. Russel Holmes is specifically interested in how these materials behave from a growth standpoint, the characterization of their optical and electrical properties, and their performance in optoelectronic devices.

Fakeye is a son of the House of Inurin in Ila-Orangun, Nigeria, a house famous for its carvers throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. George Chemeche is an artist whose work is in many museums, including the Guggenheim Museum, the Denver Art Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, and the Birmingham Museum of Art. He lives in New York City.

Excellent and thorough

An excellent book, which is thorough in its description of the ibeji twins tradition, and also presents a vast collection of images. Importantly, looking at the Ibejis can be as informative as reading about them, which is why the images play a central role in this book. I wrote this only because of the poor review by Marcos A. M. Oliveira "Marcos Arino", which happened to be the only review, which said "too many pictures." Highly recommended; most art collectors and dealers in the field use it as a reference.

Everything is There

For those of us who have ever had any interest in Ebeji or have ever seen one, this book is astounding and awe inspiring. I never new that there were so many varieties and types of sub tribes. African Art is a unique and powerfull thing. It has become so popular among art collectors and the prices they claim are breath catching. However, until now there has never been a book that has so thoroughly addressed the Ebeji of the Yoruba Tribe. If you are interested in these remarkable and beautiful peices, you should buy this book. It covers everything about them as well as it shows you the infinite creativitly of the African people.

Great, albeit overpriced, coffee-table book

This is a great, albeit slightly overpriced, coffee-table book.

The pictures in it are great -- cover a broad variety of ibeji, from various regions in Nigeria and W. Africa.

However, as one commentator said, there is really a dearth of information in this book. So much more explanation could have been provided -- be it on the Ibeji cult, Yoruba art or culture, or on the differences between the various figures from an art-historian's or cultural anthropologist's perspective.

Sadly though, as is the case with many art books, text is minimal so that translation is easy, and no changes have to be made as far as image size/text length is concerned.

So if you are looking for information about Ibeji, or Yoruba art, skip this book.

If however, you would like to give a twin or an (West)African art lover a great gift, this book makes for an impressive coffee table expense.

A Fantasy thriller from the author of 'Dragon Over Washington', 'Automatic Rebellion' and 'Mechanical'.

This 8000 words novelette relates the events taking place one night in the fortified city of Gevomya when a stranger approached the walls of the city.

Even though the sergeant of the guards feared the stranger was bringing the war with him and young Jeremy hoped to see something fantastic that came out of the Skyriver, both were horrified to discover that what really appeared shattered every dream and hope they ever had.

Author Notes: This novelette takes place in the Skyriver universe but is not a direct sequel to Dragon Over Washington. In fact, the idea for writing this story came to me while working on the sequel, and I just had to write it down before returning to working on the sequel to Dragon Over Washington.

Entertaining Short on the Nature of Heroes

The Fire at the Gates is a short story in the same setting as Dragon Over Washington (The Third War Of The Bir Nibaru Gods). A last fortress ponders the desolation of the rest of their valley when a ragged stranger arrives at their gates with an incredible tale. Story goes on to explore the importance of myths and personal convictions in the creation of a hero. Conclusion had an unexpected twist which I enjoyed. This is a fun, light fantasy short which I recommend. This story stands well on its own, regardless if one has read the novel. As this is a short story, there is not much for fans looking for more insights into the greater Skyriver Universe but it is a good story to enjoy nonetheless.

No significant editing issues were noted. The Fire at the Gates is 581 Kindle locations long. Standard length "paperback" novels seem to run in the 4,500 to 7,000 plus Kindle location range. Long novels can range from 15,000 to 20,000 plus Kindle locations.

The Fire at the Gates

I expected hi-tech electronic surveillance and commando-vs-dragon action, but The Fire at the Gates could just as well be a stand-alone short (well, not so short) fantasy story. No hi-tech or commandos, but a well-written Sargent trying to break in a dreamy young get-yourself-killed-if-you-don't-shape-up kid who's read too many tales of HEROES and DRAGONS and knows - or thinks he knows - how reality SHOULD work...
Not to give away too much, it is a fun story to read with an unexpected twist at the end - and then some, which I liked allot.
I don't see how this story relates to Dragon Over Washington yet, despite it being set in the same universe, but I guess that will be reviled in the next novel.
Which I'm really waiting for.

Just had to read this third work of Bruno Flexer

Read the first two (Dragon Over Washington and Automatic Rebellion) and just had to get the third. Again, surprises and twists and a lot of tension make for a very strong page turner.

The defenders of a castle understand that something is approaching, something that may have caused destruction on a large scale on a nearby valley. A newb guard and a veteran sergeant debate what do to with the defenses as a strange visitor unfolds his tale ...

The dragons appear to be the same dragons as in Dragon Over Washington. A great read and great fun. I like it!
