Practical, Systemic Primer on Presentation Skills

This outstanding and aptly named ESL textbook provides a systematic approach for both undergraduate and graduate students. Each self-contained chapter focuses on a common academic presentation, and provides clear guidance so students can develop their oral presentation skills. Further, Giving Academic Presentations offers sensible suggestions for how high-intermediate and advanced English language learners can give engaging, effective presentations that incorporate appropriate academic vocabulary. The detailed assignment checklists and worksheets add extra value for both students and instructors.

I strongly recommended this textbook for both high-intermediate and advanced students in university, community college, or professional programs.

The first chapter is great!

I bought this book for a presentation class for students who were matriculating into graduate schools programs. The first chapter is quite useful and interesting. It deals with giving an introductory speech. The following chapters then deal with giving about an object (boring!), a speech about a concept/definition, a process speech, and a problem-solution speech. There are some useful pieces of information in the book. I liked the information on pronunciation such as pausing, stress, intonation and rhetorical devices such as cleft sentences, rhetorical questions, and using 'Let me.' There is also a variety of rubrics/evaluation forms that are quite good. Unfortunately, it is missing a lot of important information. It doesn't introduce an outline or the components of a speech. There is no video or audio. it barely covers transitions and ways to move from main point to the next. You can find better information on giving a speech on a website from a university in Colorado. You can find the first chapter online, but don't let it fool you because the rest of the chapters are not as good.

An Outstanding Speech Textbook for Advanced English Language Learners

As a university lecturer who has used Giving Academic Presentations for several semesters, I'm quite please to see this updated, modernized version of an outstanding speech textbook for Advanced English language learners and international teaching assistants. The new version contains clearer format, far more attractive pages, and current presentation tips using contemporary technology. (The last version, written almost a decade ago, was clearly showing its age - especially in terms of illustrations.) This practical textbook systematically introduces different types of academic presentations in a clear, concise manner from introductions and object descriptions to term definitions and problem-solution presentations. Students have consistently found it helpful, and I strong recommend it for both undergraduate and graduate international students seeking to improve their public speaking skills. It can also be used for ESL and Speech courses.

A much need addition to the literature

The issue of spirituality has often been neglected in the multicultural counseling literature. Often spirituality is mentioned in an anthropological sense - a static fact you have to contend with. Fukuyama and Sevig have written this book to acknowledge the fact that spirituality is a living, dynamic factor that is essential to understanding people from diverse backgrounds. They point the reader towards ways to integrate spirituality into multicultural counseling by their use of case studies and self-reflective questions. The authors present the material in a flexible open-minded manner that allows for a variety of experiences. Rather than offering definitive answers Fukuyama and Sevig help the reader ask all the right questions. I highly recommend this book.

Hi, my name is Mark from Confident Golfer. You can visit us here at www.confidentgolfer.com. A few years ago I gave myself 20 years to turn pro and join the Seniors Tour by the time I turned 50. I figured 20 years was plenty after all , I had played golf as a junior but accepted I needed to go back to basics. I embarked on a journey and had full swing lessons, short game lessons, putting lessons - all with different dedicated coaches. I had mind coaching and custom fit clubs. I dedicated myself to golf fitness, biomechanics feedback, spent time with amateur internationals and played numerous rounds of golf with Tour Pros. I read books, watched films and videos as well as purchased many improvement gadgets. I attended week long golf clinics overseas, not to mention spending hundreds of hours at the driving range and pitching balls in the back yard. I analysed the swings of the world's best players and the minds of the world's best sports men and women across a multitude of disciplines and I drew some interesting conclusions. My priorities & goals changed but I did go from shooting rounds of 95 to shooting rounds of 75 and I want to help all Amateur Golfers to do the same by utilizing all the tips and tricks I learned along the way. Some are so simple whilst others will require a visit to a PGA Professional. However make no mistake, I have been where you are and believe there are some easy ways to shave shots off your handicap.

This was quite short. Pretty good information, but nothing really unique. If you have read a few books on putting already, you probably won't discover anything new here. But if you haven't read a bunch of books on putting, this one will be a good read.

Punchline: Stick your leg out...

This book is a fun read, organized around research on lower back pain. It is 120 odd pages attempting to convince you, via well documented research, how important the Multifidus muscle(s) are (pronounced Mul-TIFF-i-dus)-- the long groups of muscles supporting the spinal joints. The punch line is the question: ok, what do I do about it?

Well, if you've ever been to the gym, and seen someone get down on all fours, then stick one leg out behind them, that's basically it. The exercises are that, alternating legs, then more advanced, sticking the opposite arm out, and most advanced, same deal, adding ankle weights. Not a lot about the important opposing counter-Multifidus group in the abs is covered, but one exercise is tightening the abs while holding the lower back straight, which shows this author knows what he's talking about in many areas of exercise physiology and mechanics.

I found GREAT bonuses in the sections on sets vs. reps vs. strength/ endurance, etc. in general, but if you're a minimalist, the leg deal is the punchline here. Highly recommended, one of the best researched books I've ever read on ANY topic-- guy is for real and NOT anecdotal baloney like many in this genre.

As I read it I kept wondering: ok, ok, what IS the exercise???!! Unlike the 400 page web offer that fails to recommend krill oil after teasing about it as a universal heart savior, this DOES have a well studied punchline, thank you!

Focused interventions for back pain

Johnson has assembled a respectably readable book focused on addressing back pain in the vast majority of the population. His emphasis on specific quality and rigor in clinical studies adds to the value of his recommendations. Far too often, "back pain" is evaluated from the standpoint of bone (disc herniation) and/or nerve disorders (spinal cord compression). When none of this anatomy is found contributory, then either the patient is relegated to the hypochondrical bin or is pigeon-holed into some variation of bone or spine issue that never addresses the real underlying problem.

Johnson's recognition of the critical role of the multifidus muscle is well supported by the medical literature. Unfortunately, there is little surgical intervention to undertake, so the orthopedic community is mainly at a loss for recommendations. In addition, while physical fitness enthusiasts emphasize "core" exercises, the multifidus and the transversus abdominus (TA) are not typically on the list of targeted muscle groups. "Core" exercises will usually emphasize, rectus abdominus (for the 6 pack), the obliques (for side profiles), and erector spinae (for the lower back). All of these muscle groups are involved in "core" movement, but the deepest of the "core" muscles are TA and multifidus which are the real support stabilizers. This is why this book is so different. No one is ever going to see these muscles no matter how much you work them, but they are integral to stability and a pain free spine.

The exercises are not sexy, nor do they appear particularly impressive. The only results you can expect is pain free movement and most likely less aggravation with other "core" related exercises. The advice is solid and does work.

I believe that this book is probably one the best solutions I've found to helping me with my lower back pain. I have been doing the simple exercises for one week and I am already seeing improvement. I highly recommend this book to anyone with back pain, but you need to read the whole book first.

Dr. Millard (Mill) Reschke (left) and Dr. Gilles Clément (right), have conducted research primarily in the areas of spatial orientation, sensorimotor function, postural ataxia, space motion sickness, and visual-vestibular performance. Dr. Clément is Director of Research at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Toulouse, France. Dr. Reschke is NASA's Senior Neuroscientist and sensorimotor science lead at the Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. Both together and individually they have participated as investigators for experiments on nearly 100 different space flights ranging from the Apollo missions, Skylab, Shuttle, Salyut, Mir, and the International Space Station. They are currently involved with developing sensorimotor countermeasures for long-duration space flight, experiments on board the ISS and assisting with preparations for the future lunar and Mars flights.

About the Author

Since the first orbital flight of John Glenn, investigations have been conducted on the adaptation of nervous functions to space flight Millard Reschke and Gilles Clément have been active in this research, with experiments flown onboard Salyut, Mir, Spacelab, and 30+ flights of the Space Shuttle . This book presents in a readable text and detailed illustrations the findings from these experiments conducted during and after space missions. The authors also identify the neuroscience research that is foreseen onboard the International Space Station and what do we need to learn to understand fully the implications and risks in this area for a human mission to Mars.
