A Horrible Book Which Is Important Nonetheless

My first thought about this book was that it was confusing as hell and I wanted to get rid of it as soon as my class over. The distinction between a latin letter to represent a scalar, a greek letter to represent a vector and an italic letter to represent a matrix was just too messed up. But it's grown on me and now I see the value in this book. Whereas all other linear algebra books talk about vector spaces and groups over the fields of real or complex numbers, Finkbeiner discusses other fields as well like the finite integer fields. That fact turned out to be so useful in my later life and it never would have occurred to me had it not been for this book. I heartily recommend it and suggest that you plow through it despite the horrible way it's written. I'm scoring it in the middle because of the way it reads.

‘He had a confidence I’d never seen in a man before. Like he knew no matter what he asked of me, I’d say yes in a millisecond.

I held my breath as he caressed my cheek with his fingertips, causing my eyes to flutter closed momentarily.

“Laney?” The sound of my name from his lips, along with that delicious accent, made everyone and everything around us nonexistent. His big, blue eyes were a stark contrast to my own dull green irises. “I’m going to kiss you now.”

His words came out, not as a question, but as a warning. He planned to take what he desired, and it was no surprise I wanted him to. I couldn’t wait to find out what he tasted like.’

Ohhhh that was one hot and tender yet intense moment right there and as always Rene’s wonderful way of teasing you in the beginning, and saying lookie here just a wee bit of what is to come. Flatter Me is Rene Folsom’s next amazing story in her Roommate Romance series.

This book has me grabbing my side and busting out laughing at these three hot Aussie men with their adorable one liner pick up lines when they enter the coffee shop where Laney works. “You look very lost right now, do you need me to find you?” OMG I think I would have just started laughing right then and there but props to Laney for holding it together. These guys were down right gorgeous and have those sexy Australian accents to boot. What I wouldn’t give to work in that coffee shop.

“Hey, Laney?” Have you got any Aussie in you?” His question confused me because we’d already told the stories of where we were from. Then it clicked. Both his friends started with pithy little one-liners, and he was trying to be a funny bunny. I decided to play along.

“Not yet,” I responded with a wink.

His smile broadened with my willingness to be playful. “Well, would you like some?”

“Did you think I invited you over here for tea?”

“Wait. You have tea?” Smacking him on his chest, I rolled my eyes and pushed him away from me.

WOW, I absolutely loved that, the playful banter between the guys and Laney is charming throughout the entire book. And this right here just leads into even steamier, sexier scenes. R+++ Rated scenes LOL but oh so good.

I just absolutely loved the one line zingers throughout the entire book. Rene really changed it up in this book and I found it refreshing. Of course adding men that are sexy with accents what girl just doesn’t go weak in the knees for that? As Laney says ‘His voice is like sex on a stick.’ I could listen to an accent like that all day long.

Oh for those of you who like Lollipops I think Rene does too. There is an awesome reference to them in this book. I won’t spoil it for you but get ready it is priceless. Awesome book as always Rene.

Author Rene Folsom knocked it out of the ball park again with her Roommate Romance novella. This book is one of my favorites, aside from Heart You.

Items you will need before reading this book: Extra pair of panties, a quite room and a cigarette for when you get done reading this novella.

Rene knows how to take you out of your everyday life and place you into this fantasy world she has made.

Laney is a barista for a small coffee shop, at the end of closing time, three sexy Australian men walk in and start giving her cheesy pickup lines, flattering yes, but cheesy all the same. Not knowing that the one that was standing by himself, will change her and have her sticking to her New Years resolution : ...Grab life by the horns and stop being uptight. Take a risk and have some fun. ...

That is what Trevor will have Laney doing by the end of the night. A one night stand, with no attachments, just what she needed after being on a six month dry spell... right?

I am so flustered, I am not really sure where to start. Oh yeah, the beginning and oh the deliciousness awaiting us.....

Laney works at a coffee shop and is just waiting for closing time. She has been telling herself that it is a New Year and she promised herself she will let go and enjoy life more, maybe take some risks and have some fun. Little did she know, three sexy Australian men would walk through the door of the coffee shop and shake up her boring little world.

They start feeding her cheesy one-liners, which Laney doesn't bite. She could care less. But when the dark haired man walks up to her counter, she starts losing herself to his smell, his accent and the desire to see what is underneath that leather jacket of his.

Laney is hesitant about taking Trevor back to her apartment. After a bite to eat, conversation and some reassuring words from Trevor she gives in. Back at her apartment it starts as soon as they walk in the door. Their romp is so HOT and so YUMMY!

After that night together the two of them are inseparable. They spend lots of time together and Laney worries what will happen when Trev has to return to Australia.

I didn't think it could get any better..... IT SO DOES!!

OMG!! Rene takes us to a place every woman probably desires deep down, but may not admit. When Trevor asks Laney what she wants for her birthday, she reveals a dream she had about Trevor's buddies, herself and Trevor. Let your imagination take you where your deepest desires are hidden and you will find the answer. I DID!! Of course Trevor has some rules that his buddies must abide by, but he gives Laney the wildest ride of her entire life.

This was by far my absolute favorite of the Roommate Romance stories. Rene takes us to a place of pure ecstasy, pleasure and the need for more of Trevor and Laney's story.

I was one HOT MESS when I finished this book and loved every detailed word of it!!

Because of the Nazis' merciless persecution of Jews in Germany, Edith Stein traveled discreetly across the border into Holland to find safe harbor in the Carmel of Echt. But the Nazi invasion of Holland in 1940 again put Edith in danger. The cross weighed down heavily as those of Jewish birth were harassed. Sr. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross's superiors then assigned her a task they thought would take her mind off the threatening situation. The fourth centenary of the birth, of St. John of the Cross (1542) was approaching, and Edith could surely contribute a valuable study for the celebration. It is no surprise that in view of her circumstances she discovered in the subject of the cross a central viewpoint for her study. A subject like this enabled her to grasp John's unity of being as expressed in his life and works.
Using her training in phenomenology, she helps the reader apprehend the difference in the symbolic character of cross and night and why the night-symbol prevails in John. She clarifies that detachment is designated by him as a night through which the soul must pass to reach union with God and points out how entering the night is equivalent to carrying the cross.
Finally, in a fascinating way Edith speaks of how the heart or fountainhead of personal life, an inmost region, is present in both God and the soul and that in the spiritual marriage this inmost region is surrendered by each to the other. She observes that in the soul seized by God in contemplation all that is mortal is consumed in the fire of eternal love. The spirit as spirit is destined for immortal being, to move through fire along a path from the cross of Christ to the glory of his resurrection.

A difficult book analysing the mystical thought of St John of the Cross

In this book, Edith Stein set about doing a fairly systematic analysis of the works of St John of the Cross sprinkled with the thoughts of Teresea and Avila and mediated through the eyes of another saint (St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), namely Edith Stein herself.

It has to be said that this book is hard going simply because, whilst the language used for what happens in the mystical life is comprehensible when read cold on the page, it is significatory and emblematic language. It is describing a relationship with He, who is wholly Other, He, who is the First and the Last, and the Creator of all things, and without Whom all things would cease to exist. What one comes away with though is that the mystical life is only for those who are prepared to ascend to Calvary with Christ, and absolute death to the Self, so that Christ's "Eloi,Eloi..." on the cross becomes your cry. "With Christ, I hang upon the Cross" says St Paul to the Galatians and indeed (seemingly) that is precisely the life of the mystic.

And, indeed we saw with the publication of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta's letters, that for her, she felt bereft of God, but carried out her Master's commandments of love nonetheless. No sensual experiences of the Risen Christ, no spiritual goodies, just the dark night of faith, where the soul suspended on his Cross gives his resounding "yes" to the Father of Lights. Let there be no doubt about it, the mystical sort of life (as decribed in this book) appears to demand heroic sacrifice. But, it should be noted that both John of the Cross and Teresa of Avil seem to have gone into ecstacies without warning: indeed John would not say Mass for days for fear, he would be unable to attract attention to himself. (Note, St Joseph of Cupertino, who, when saying mass, used to levitate: amusingly he is now the patron saint of pilots; the Church has a sense of humour!)

It should be noted however that the saints of the Eastern churches seemed to have been blessed with a different type of mystical vision, not the one of the Christ crucified, but of the risen Christ. The two lungs of the Church when breathing together spirate the whole breathe of salvation, namely the breathe of the Christ dying in agony and the breathe of the risen Christ, who says: "all authority under heaven and earth has been given to me, baptise in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit".

Prepositions are the major problem for ESL learners

I have been to many ESL classes.

However, I still have difficulties writing correct English sentences. All these classes overlooked my two major grammar problems.

Whenever I write, I have to think a lot before selecting an appropriate preposition or article.

Fortunately, I came across the books of this excellent author Tom Cole:

The Preposition Book

The Article Book

I like his way of teaching. First, he introduces a rule, then you have exercises with the answers. After several rules, you have a comprehensive test covering them all. Each book has a lot of material, but you do not have to cram the rules. You memorize them by doing all these exercises. So, the books are great for self-study.

Excellent supplement for exam study

I tutor students for the Cambridge exams (FCE, CAE, CPE, etc.), and the TOEFL test, among others. The hardest part of these exam for all of them, no matter how long they've been studying the language, is the English in Use section. Prepositions are such an important part of the language (any language), but they are said so quickly that it's very hard for an English learner to catch them unless they are concentrating very hard, but it's a frustrating process. Up until now, I thought that simply by reading a lot they would subconsciously absorb the words, but, through my own struggles in learning prepositions in another language, I've finally realized, that prepositions have to be actually studied, then practised, and only then will the student be able to hear them consciously and use them correctly.

I found Tom Cole's book after a long search, and it is exactly what I've been looking for to help my students. It explains the prepositions and phrasal verbs in groups, gives clear explanations and examples, offers many excercises, and then gives a quiz at the end of every chapter. It also has the answers at the end of the chapter which I find much easier than having to look in the back.

The description of the book says that it's geared toward intermediate students, but even the most advanced students have the same problems with prepositions if they've never studied them, and so I would say that this book is very useful for pretty much any level.

It's a book that's been very well thought-out and it's just what students of these tests need, to feel more confident about this extremely challenging part of many English language exams.

Disappointed! The CD-ROM does not accompany this book.

Reading the back cover of this book, I got the impression that the CD-ROM was included--

It clearly says, "The Preposition Book is accompanied by a CD-ROM,Preposition Pinball and Other Games, which is sold separately or with this book." Turns out the CD-ROM is not sold with this book, but is a separate purchase on Amazon.com for another $24++. Since the CD-ROM is where the essential practice and instant feedback sessions are, the book sans the CD-ROM is but a shell. Just a quick succession of tersely stated rules and a couple of cursory exercises that follow. It is also puported to be an instruction manual for the CD-ROM, which you will have to purchase separately, of course.

The book itself is strictly OK. I take away stars for disingenuous marketing, and for nickel and diming the consumer. I expected better sale ethics from a public univeristy, like the publisher of this book....

Not terribly helpful

I read this book because I wanted a concise and thorough refresher on the problem of free will and because I thought it might shed some helpful new light on the subject. The book was disappointing in both regards, unfortunately, and thus I cannot recommend it, either to the beginning or the advanced student.

Let me mention that my disappointment is not due to any lack of sympathy for the author's project. Like Dr. Pink, I affirm libertarian freedom and I reject attempts to naturalize human agency. I am glad that the author wishes to defend a traditional, robust conception of free will, but I found his exposition repetitive and confusing and his arguments almost wholly unpersuasive.

It should also be said that the book is not without insights. For example, it succeeds in showing how, thanks to the naturalist program of Thomas Hobbes, the modern problem of free will differs importantly from the problem as treated in the medieval period. The book frames the free will problem in terms of action theory, a somewhat interesting approach, and it contains a pretty good critique of agent causation.

Nevertheless, in my judgment, the book's negative qualities outweigh the positive. A constant source of irritation is Pink's appeals to "what we ordinarily believe" to answer determinist and compatibilist objections. It is as if he thinks that folk ontology includes a worked-out libertarian theory of agency, and that compatibilism and determinism enjoy absolutely no support from our everyday intuitions.

A more serious problem is the author's failure to define his terms clearly or to give a precise map of the terrain he is covering. For example, he never clearly distinguishes, and in some places seems to conflate, freedom as ultimate responsibility and freedom as alternative possibilities (cf. Robet Kane, The Significance of Free Will). And he makes no mention of, among other things, the consequence argument, the distinction between agent causation and event causation, reactive attitudes, or Frankfurt examples. Such omissions are surprising in a book purporting to introduce the subject of free will.

Worse yet, while the author discusses compatibilism at some length, if only as a foil for his own view, he does not consider incompatibilist determinism in any detail and he does not mention semi-compatibilism at all. This book is really an introduction to libertarianism, not free will, and an unclear one at that. There is nothing wrong with defending one's point of view, of course, but the reader does not come away with a clear understanding of alternative theories, let alone the arguments for them.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the book is its obscurity. Not only is the author's writing muddled, as already mentioned, but I find his theory, well, bizarre. Pink's thesis is something like the following: Freedom is a sui generis non-causal power to form goals exercised through the medium of action. Perhaps this speaks to my shortcomings more than the author's, but I am still puzzling over what this amounts to. I think Pink would need to develop his view in much more detail, including a careful excursus on causation, before it became clear. In the present book, his attempt to lay out his view competes with his aim of providing a "very short introduction" to free will, and consequently he succeeds in neither.

AN EMBRASSMENT TO BOTH PHILOSOPHY AND THE VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION SERIES

I have read a large number of the Very Short Introduction series and am on the whole very impressed with them. Reading this particular book, however, I felt I was reading a very bad exam paper. The text is replete with the type of flawed argumentation one would expect from a keen but unpromising high school pupil. It was so bad that I was able to find at least one major flaw per page, often more. Some of the worst flaws include:

* Pink frequently assumes that because something need not be the case that it therefore is not the case.
* Pink fails to present a theory for freedom, relying instead on very poor attempts to undermine the counter-arguments to the case for freedom of the will, arguments he is either willfully distorting or has not understood.
* Pink makes the flawed assumption that theories of causal determinism are necessarily reductive.
* Pink's arguments against determinism, garrulous as they are, are not more sophisticated than 'we have free will because we perceive that we have it'.
* Pink's book is, as another reviewer has highlighted, highly repetitive. In fact, this is an understatement. It could not be more repetitive if it tried. This could easily have fitted onto 30 pages.
* Pink takes certain key terms for granted (e.g. 'we', 'self', 'free agent'), perhaps realising that their definition may undermine his rambling hypotheses.
* At times, Pink seems to assume that prior causation must mean that things are mapped out for the individual since before birth, rather than acknowledging the chaos and flux which is at play in causal relationships. This in itself is an example of the reductionism he readily criticizes elsewhere.
* Pink argues against the Hobbesian view that action is driven by prior desires with the awful counter-example of 'if I am out walking, and decide to take a break on a bench, then decide to get up and continue my walk, that decision is not driven by prior desires'. His notion of temporality is skewed here, for 'man wishes to get up and continue walk, gets up, continues walk' is sufficient to undermine his argument. Immediately prior is still prior.
* In trying to undermine the role of desires in action, he replaces this term with `motivation'. However, he fails to define `motivation' and fails to show how it is any different or any more amenable to freedom than `desire'.
* Et cetera ad nauseum...

All in all, Pink has produced something that is an embarassment to philosophy. He shouldn't be teaching at a university, let alone publishing books. I suggest he goes back to school to learn the very basics of philosophy. Whether you come from the determinist, compatibilist or libertarian camp, this book has only one thing to offer: an example of how not to argue a case for the freedom of the will.

A misguided introduction to free will

This was probably the worst VSI I've read (and, given that I love the series, I've read quite a few). It does very little in the way of an introduction to the subject, or even in the way of a lucid exposition. Pink treats the free will problem as a sort of constant problem throughout the ages, paying very little regard to profound historical differences in treatment (excepting, perhaps, his short discussion of the Middle Ages). The lack of the kind of sensitivity needed by a historian of ideas becomes apparent when the author again and again writes off Hobbes's theory as "wrong," in light of what we now know (or Pink now knows) about the subject (or when he talks about "reversing" some intellectual changes occurred since the Middle Ages). Common sense becomes too often the main judge and the sole source of evidence in the author's arguments. From the beginning, Pink frames the terms of the debate, in the way that best suits his purposes, and then purports to resolve the free will problem in a way consistent with freedom. The last section of the book is called "In defence of libertarian freedom." That should be the name of the book, even if the defense the author accomplishes is markedly capricious (frequently omitting, for instance, the names and arguments of his opponents). The book may be useful in a class setting aimed at presenting Pink's "solution" to the free will problem, but as a VSI on the subject it was very unsatisfying.
