In the small entry titled `If Einstein was Black,' he proposed that if Einstein lived in the hood with his disabilities, he would have been a drug addict or dead beat dad. Einstein's environment would not have been conducive to the way he learned and he would have been placed in special-education classes because of the system's intolerance for alternate methods of learning. How many Einsteins do you think we have lurking in our special-education systems throughout the world's urban areas? Another section that piqued my interest is titled '13 Ways to Destroy Yourself.' In this section, he gives you exactly that. Staying angry, sacrificing sleep, getting into the wrong line of work, and ignoring your doctor are a few of the firsts. While reading, I began to place myself (and a few others I know) in a few of the self-destructive categories he listed. Certainly this information is available, but I have never seen them listed together like they are in Rap, Race and Revolution. And I have never seen them applied in such a way that I see how it is ruining our Black community. Supreme Understanding has given a gift to his people; especially the young, Black man. The author put together a guide that helps you assess your life via current and historical events, surveys, tips, and much more. The layout of the book allows you to jump from section to section without feeling disjointed and the author's passion is apparent throughout the entire book. If you are of the Hip-Hop culture, this book is a must have. If you have young, black men to raise, this book is a must read and would be great for gifting. If you are black and feel like the American dream is unreachable, read this book (as well as How To Hustle and Win). About the Author
Supreme Understanding is a community activist, educator, and expert on the socio-economical and psychological struggles of oppressed people.
Supreme received his bachelor s degree in world history from Morehouse College, followed by a master s degree in urban education from Georgia State University. At 26, he received his doctorate in education from Argosy University, where he focused his research on the benefits of non-formal education with at-risk youth and disadvantaged populations.
In 2000, Supreme co-founded Show and Prove Youth Outreach, a non-profit organization dedicated to the education and empowerment of at-risk teens. In 2006, Supreme Design, LLC was incorporated to design and publish materials and literature for Show and Prove.
Supreme Understanding s work has brought him to Ghana, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, India, Japan, Thailand, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, England, the Caribbean, and dozens of cities throughout the United States. The author s travels have provided him in-depth opportunities to learn about the struggles of oppressed people throughout the world, and their similarities with the struggles of people of color in the U.S.
Supreme is a highly sought-after lecturer, and his multimedia presentations have engaged diverse audiences of both youth and adults. Supreme has presented on a variety of topics with organizations as diverse as the ACLU, the Urban League, 100 Black Men, the Japanese Ministry of Education, and the U.S. Social Forum.

Great Primer

I just found this book in the new book shelves at the university library. What a find! This book is a perfect primer for someone wanting to learn about the early Civil Rights Movement in the USA. It is also perfect to use in the classroom. The margins are filled with information about the various key players. The author also included a timeline, important documents, a list of important key figures in the movement, and other useful matter.

This book is useful for teachers who teach: American History, Civil Rights, Social Movements, African American History, and American Politics. The book is written well and is not filled with academese. It's an engaging read about a pivotal point in the history of the US.

Great Book!!!

The book is great for getting a very detailed account of the history of the civil rights movement. The terms and the timeline are also very helpful and things that you won't find so clearly laid out in other books.

There are some verbs and descriptions that the author uses too loosely, as though he were there at the historical events about which he's speaking, but it doesn't really matter because you will most likely be reading the book for the historical facts and terminolgy.

It's an easy read and a book that you should keep so that you can go back to it for research and just in general.

A fascinating story of one of the biggest swindles on Wall Street.

Tino DeAngelis was a world Class swindler. I had the pleaure to meet him several times and he was charming. He resented I was tall so when we talked we sat. He would not look up to anybody and since he was very short of height you talked to him sitting down.

About the Author
Brian and Deborah Charlesworth obtained PhDs in genetics at the University of Cambridge, and have subsequently worked at the Universities of Liverpool, Sussex, Chicago, and Edinburgh. Brian is a Fellow of the Royal Society and Honorary Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Deborah is a Fellow of the Royal Society. Both currently work on questions in population genetics, molecular and genome evolution, and also on mating system evolution.

An Outstanding Volume

I'm a grad student of behavioural ecology with a passion for all things evolution. In this day and age any firm understanding of evolution and adaptation must be deeply rooted in genetics and the Charlesworth's comprehensive text is an outstanding resource for relative newcomers, like myself, and for established researchers I'm sure. It very accessible though it doesn't skimp on theory so you have the choice of delving deep into the all the relevant equations and models or simply wandering through the main concepts. I can't recommend it enough to all those searching for a deeper understanding of evolution.

An authorative work on evolutionary genetics

The Charlesworths have written a magnificent book on the subject. This book has only a few peers, albeit outdated. They are: Dobzhansky's "Genetics of the Evolutionary Process," and Lewontin's "The Genetic Basis of Evolutionary Change." I wholeheartedly endorse the reviews by Warren Ewens, Michael Turelli and Montgomery Slatkin. This is a book to be treasured and delved into repeatedly by anyone who is really interested in understanding the panoply among genetics (both molecular and organismic), evolution and ecology. Their dedication of the book to one of the grand minds in genetics - James Crow - is humbling!

Michael R. Czinkota teaches international marketing and business at the Graduate School and the Robert Emmett McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, USA, and at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. He has held professorial appointments at universities in Asia, Australia, Europe, South Africa, and the Americas. Dr. Czinkota served in the U.S. government as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce. He also served as head of the U.S. Delegation to the OECD Industry Committee in Paris and as senior advisor for Export Controls. Dr. Czinkota s background includes eight years of private-sector business experience as a partner in a fur-trading firm and in an advertising agency. His research has been supported by the U.S. government, the National Science Foundation, the Organization of American States, and the American Management Association. He was listed as one of the three most published contributors to international business research in the Journal of International Business Studies, and has written several books, including Best Practices in International Marketing and Mastering Global Markets. Dr.Czinkota served on the Global Advisory Board of the American Marketing Association, the Global Council of the American anagement Association, and the Board of Governors of the Academy of Marketing Science. He is on the editorial board of Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of International Marketing, and Asian Journal of Marketing. For his work in international business and trade policy, he received the Lifetime Research Achievement Award in International Marketing from the American Marketing Association. He was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Academy of Marketing Science, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in the United Kingdom. He has been awarded honorary degrees from the Universidad Pontifica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic and the Universidad del Pacifico in Lima, Peru. Dr. Czinkota serves on several corporate boards and has worked with corporations, such as AT&T, IBM, GE, Nestle and US WEST. He advises the Executive Office of the President of the United States, the United Nations, and the World Trade Organization. Dr. Czinkota is often asked to testify before the United States Congress. Dr. Czinkota was born and raised in Germany and educated in Austria, Scotland, Spain, and the United States. He studied law and business administration at the University of Erlangen and was awarded a two-year Fulbright Scholarship. Susan is the middle-aged wife of an older man, Christopher, whose dementia has sent him into rapid deterioration. Leaving him asleep and alone in their house for a few minutes, she returns to find he's walked out into the snowy woods near their rural town. Jeff, a Vietnam vet with a cheating wife, is on the search and rescue team searching for Christopher and also, as a social worker, has Corey within his purview. During the long wait for leads on Christopher, the trio meditate on their histories of love and betrayal, death and violence, while the temperature drops and hope fades, though Jeff remains a presence at Susan's side through the horrible shock that awaits them. The unending toll of bereavement and trauma contrasts with a glimmer of hope brought by the characters' newfound connection in this stark and moving novel. (Mar.)

Lichtenstein’s second family-centered novel links three dissimilar families who come together one frigid weekend in northern New Jersey. Susan Hunsinger, a biology professor, and her older husband, Christopher, who suffers from dementia, have recently moved upstate from Princeton. Susan leaves Christopher briefly alone; when she returns, he has vanished. When she contacts the authorities, and the first to respond is Jeff, a social worker and search-and-rescue expert whose promiscuous wife has recently deserted him. Lichtenstein carefully fills in the disparate backgrounds of these vulnerable characters: Susan’s struggle to care for her incapacitated husband, and her reluctance to ask for help; Jeff’s feelings of inadequacy professionally and as a husband. And in the background is Corey, a youngster whose family hates and ultimately abandons him because of the accidental fire he started, killing his brother. As Opposed To Becoming Lost In 'Lost,' I Became Stuck.

I was terribly disappointed with `Lost,' which, at first, captivated me. In my opinion, the spell cast by author, Alice Lichtenstein, was too easily broken due to the excessive shifts in narrative. I found that there was something disquieting with these shifts - they were almost too abrupt. Therefore, I found myself staying quite a distance away from connecting with the characters and their narratives.

There are several main characters whose lives intersect. All of these characters are either lost, damaged and/or broken people. Rather than be distinct characters, in their own lives, too many of these characters [at least for me] did not appear terribly believable. I do not know why I felt this way, but I did. Christopher, a 70-ish year old architect, is suffering from dementia. He seemed the most real to me. His wife, Susan, a genius, is twelve years his junior. If one forgets how bright Susan is, not to worry. You will often be reminded of this. She is so intelligent that when fleeting `burn-out' occurs, Susan feels compelled to go for a quick walk. Christopher is left home alone, leaves this home and becomes lost.

Susan also manages to say something rather insulting to their son, Peter, just as he was leaving their home. There are some extremely tender moments between father and son. Peter did not deserve Susan's statement.

There is a search for Christopher. During this search the reader learns increasingly more about Jeff, as well as Corey.

`Lost' is over seasoned with the word `lost.'

I regret to state that this book simply did not resonate with me.

Not the kind of book I usually read

Sometimes you have to try something new. Order a different sandwich at the deli. Take a different approach to dealing with a difficult person. I have a tendency to stick to what I know I like. I do this with most everything; music, food, people and especially with books.

But when I read the description for this book I thought, 'why not? You've been in kinda a rut lately, take a risk on something out of your comfort zone.'

My main concern was that this could be a real downer (I HATE sad endings). Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid don't just bum me out they make me weepy and wailey for days.

So, if you are at all like me (my condolances if you are) don't fear, this isn't a downer book.

It's an interesting book with real people in challenging situations. The last time I felt such worry and concern for a fragile cast of characters is when I read Moriarty's, Center of Everything.

I felt real empathy for Susan and Cory. Jeff was a sad man and more than anything I wanted to send him away from the frozen wasteland he'd exiled himself to, because he, even more than Susan, had built his own hell and seemed to wallow in it, unable to leave or even imagine a world outside.

Susan's plight, loving someone who has changed into something childlike, was the character I could best identify with. The plight of family members caring for loved ones with alzheimers is truly horrifying, every day a wistful hopefullness that fades as time passes.

By the end of the book the reader is left with the feeling that Susan, Jeff and Cory will survive and thrive. That their expectations had to change and so did they to reach a balance.

Will I search out more books like this? Probably not. But I can't say I regret the time I spent reading this book.

Likely to forget this story...

I'm giving LOST a very generous two stars. It's not a bad book. I just found it to be quite boring. So boring that it took me 5 days to read this 240 page book, and I fell asleep twice while reading it.

It's not until that last 40 pages that the book really piqued my interest, but I knew very early on the decision Susan was going to make with regards to Corey. It was practically telegraphed by the author. There could have been more written here. I feel as if the author rushed to finish the book and edited a lot of the story out. It is certainly a well written book, just not a memorable one.
