"As someone who has used this book in the past, I know it is excellent for teaching medical students. It also is reasonably priced for students who are dealing with the high cost of medical education. The most valuable features are the excellent pictures and figures that enhance the understanding of complex issues. Perfect!

This is a book I will hold on to forever. Incredibly valuable resource. It is very dense and may be difficult to study from directly, but keep it on your bookshelf and I promise you will find yourself referring back to it often if you work in microbiology, epidemiology, or medicine. It has comprehensive tables, tons of great photos and illustrations, and online resources that are great for studying or refreshing your memory. This book was an assigned text for a course I took that did a broad summary of pathogens in one semester, and it really contains WAY more information than could possibly be put into one graduate course. Regardless, it gave a great framework for the semester and is one of the rare ones that I don't want to sell or never see again in my life when the course is over. It is so thorough. Highly recommended! My only real complaint is that I wish it was available in hardcover. It does appear the earlier editions give you the choice, but I haven't looked at them so I can't speak to any differences in content. I do think the online material is worth the purchase of the new edition.

I really liked this book- this was really helpful in Med Micro despite the fact my class did not require it- I am very glad I bought this and used the online question bank that comes along when you buy the book new- I am a second year allopathic med student.

In recent years, there has been something of an explosion in the performance of live music to silent films. There is a wide range of films with live and new scores that run from the historically accurate orchestral scores to contemporary sounds by groups such as Pet Shop Boys or by experimental composers and gothic heavy metal bands. It is no exaggeration to claim that music constitutes a bridge between the old silent film and the modern audience; music is also a channel for non-scholarly audiences to gain an appreciation of silent films. Music has become a means both for musicians and audiences to understand this bygone film art anew. This book is the first of its kind in that it aims to bring together writings and interviews to delineate the culture of providing music for silent films. It not only has the character of a scholarly work but is also something of a manual in that it discusses how to make music for silent films.

About the Author
K.J.Donnelly is Reader in Film Studies at the University of Southampton, UK. He is author of Occult Aesthetics: Synchronization in Sound Film (2014), British Film Music and Film Musicals (2007), The Spectre of Sound (2005) and Pop Music in British Cinema (2001), and editor of Film Music: Critical Approaches (2001), co-editor of Music in Video Games: Studying Play (2013) and Music in Science Fiction Television (2012).

Ann-Kristin Wallengren is Professor in Film Studies, Lund University, Sweden. Her research embraces questions about film and national and cultural identity, representation, ideology and transnationality, as well as on different aspects of film music. She has recently published Welcome Home Mr Swanson: Swedish Emigrants and Swedishness in Film and, together with K.J.Donnelly, a special issue of Music and the Moving Image about the psychology of film music.

Great book. Arrived in great condition. Very informative. Especially enjoyed the synopsis of the 1928 film, Beggars of Life, featuring Blue Washington as Mose. A very important role for an African American actor of this era in film. A must read, and a film that is a must see to appreciate.

Love this book. It has a variety of music, many of them the best loved hymns we grew up singing, in two versions. I've only been playing the harp for two years and its nice to have an easier version to play but it is also nice to have the second version to aspire to.
