About the Author
William J. Duiker is liberal arts Professor Emeritus of East Asian studies at The Pennsylvania State University. A former U.S. diplomat with service in Taiwan, South Vietnam, and Washington, D.C., he received his doctorate in Far Eastern history from Georgetown University. At Penn State, he has written extensively on the history of Vietnam and modern China, including the highly acclaimed COMMUNIST ROAD TO POWER IN VIETNAM (revised edition, Westview Press, 1996), which was selected for a Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award in 1982?1983 and 1996?1997. Other books are CHINA AND VIETNAM: THE ROOTS OF CONFLICT (Berkeley, 1987), U.S. CONTAINMENT POLICY AND THE CONFLICT IN INDOCHINA (Stanford, 1995), SACRED WAR: NATIONALISM AND REVOLUTION IN A DIVIDED VIETNAM (McGraw-Hill, 1995), and HO CHI MINH (Hyperion, 2000), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2001. While his research specialization is in the field of nationalism and Asian revolutions, his intellectual interests are considerably more diverse. He has traveled widely and has taught courses on the history of communism and non-Western civilizations at Penn State, where he was awarded a Faculty Scholar Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the spring of 1996. In 2002 the College of Liberal Arts honored him with an Emeritus Distinction Award.

Jackson J. Spielvogel is Associate Professor Emeritus of History at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as Moreana, Journal of General Education, Catholic Historical Review, Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte, and American Historical Review. He also has contributed chapters or articles to THE SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION, THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, the SIMON WIESENTHAL CENTER ANNUAL OF HOLOCAUST STUDIES, and UTOPIAN STUDIES. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western Civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (7th Edition, 2014). He is the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (9th Edition, 2015), and the coauthor (with William Duiker) of WORLD HISTORY, first published in 1994 (8th Edition, 2016). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988?1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

Not a wide variety of decor styles photographed: mostly mid century and boho

I follow Emily's blog and could not wait to buy this book. However, after reading it cover to cover, I was mildly disappointed. She has a quiz for what style you are, and then proceeds to have almost all photographs (however gorgeous) mostly in the mid century modern, or boho style. There isn't much of any of the others. If she is so talented, why can't she feature a cabin in the woods styled up, or a cottage home, or traditional house? Isn't there anything else to decorate with besides books, leather mid century chairs, fig leaf plants, and naked human art?

This book is for people that love eclectic clutter

I was really excited to get this book. Both my parents are designers, decorators and former architects, so I feel like I own about 1,000 home decor books and I am always excited to add more to the collection. I read some of tips online that are directly from this book and thought they were lovely, which is why I bought the book. It seems that the best this book has to offer was already posted online because the few bits I found were the only bits that were useful in the entire book. The advice she gives claims to be useful for a number of different personal styles, but they were all just iterations of just one style: some kind of cross between bohemian, and ranch "chic." Every style guide in this book was cluttered and strange and frankly exhausting to look at, especially when you consider that these are for your home, your comfortable every day space. She forgets that while some things *might* look cool at a glance, nobody will want to come home every single day to 16 framed drawings of eggplants above their couch on a brown wall. Or to three paintings of naked ladies in their "artist space." Or to a kitchen decorated entirely with gold and mirrors. Or to a dark scary forrest painted from floor to ceiling in their bedroom.
I personally have what she describes as a "traditional" style (as defined by the style guide/quiz in the book), but there really was nothing resembling traditional in the book, even by her own definition of traditional.
This book overrated and frankly ridiculous. I'm not sure I've ever returned a style book in my life, so this is a first. [SPOILER] She only says two useful things in the book: 1) Find pictures of home decor that speak to you, and emulate them (which is fantastic and classic home decor advice) and 2) hang curtain rods higher, longer and wider than the windows so that they don't block light and look more polished (another gem for any style). Both those tidbits I found online and nothing else in the book came close to useful. I recommend instead Domino: The Book of Decorating: A Room-by-Room Guide to Creating a Home That Makes You Happy. The advice in that book is timeless and practical. I've owned this book for years, it is by no means dated and the room by room style guides continue to provide advice that keeps my personal space fresh and beautiful. I especially LOVE the "small space solution" section in every chapter that gives advice for smaller spaces. Despite the dozens of home decor books that I own, I find that I use the Domino book more than any of the others. Go for that instead!

I LOVE Emily Henderson, but resisted purchasing this book till she gave some great advice on her blog. I figured the book would be full of more of the same. I was determined to read the book cover to cover.
The first 26 pages are dedicated to how much better your life will be once you know your decorating style, which would be magically revealed to you once you took the quiz. The book elaborated on how it wold make your life easier, and would even reveal some things about yourself that would be helpful on a personal level.
The quiz starts by asking two questions, which determine the which set of questions you go on to answer from there. The first question was do you like curvy or streamlined (straight) furniture. I happen to like straight furniture, as I do not like wasted space. The second question asks, do you like your bookshelves sparse or loaded. I very much like my bookshelves loaded. I like to mentally calculate how much I have exceed the max load with each addition. From this I was directed to answer the first 10 questions.
I found the answers to the questions very pretentious, and not terribly relate-able . I tried to put a lot of thought in it, and it took me 30 minutes to answer all 10 questions. After sweating it out, I finally tallied my score, anxiously turned the page to find the results, and Emily's quiz accused me of being "Contemporary". In reading the description it states I like things minimal, but didn't I answer I like my bookshelves chuck full of stuff in the first place? Hmmmmmm!
I am a lot of things, but contemporary is not one of them...not even a little tiny bit. In fact, I deal and collect antiques. My new "contemporary" identity told me I have little use for the past. Everything in my house has a past. I actually found myself resenting the author.....my former hero. I studied the other styles with a longing, trying to figure out what I could have answered differently. I took the quiz again with the same results.
After the quiz, and the lost promise of self-awareness, i just didn't know where to go from there. I tried opening the book again, but was lost. I kind of skimmed through it, but not in total. Then I opened onto a page where the author mention a grid of daguerreotypes, and she lost me for good. Those were not daguerreotypes, they were etchings. Something completely, and totally different, not even in the same playing field. Perhaps if she were "contemporary" like myself, she would actually know the difference in her antique images.

In challenging this latter claim, Seeing Differently critically examines how and why we "identify" works of art with an expressive subjectivity, noting the impossibility of claiming we are "post-identity" given the persistence of beliefs in art discourse and broader visual culture about who the subject "is," and offers a new theory of how to think this kind of identification in a more thoughtful and self-reflexive way.

Ultimately, Seeing Differently offers a mode of thinking identification as a "queer feminist durational" process that can never be fully resolved but must be accounted for in thinking about art and visual culture. Queer feminist durationality is a mode of relational interpretation that affects both "art" and "interpreter," potentially making us more aware of how we evaluate and give value to art and other kinds of visual culture.

Amelia Jones is Professor and Grierson Chair in Visual Culture at McGill University in Montréal. Her recent publications include major essays on Marina Abramović (in TDR), on feminist art and curating, and on performance art histories, as well as the edited volume Feminism and Visual Culture Reader (2003, 2010). Her most recent book is Self/Image: Technology, Representation, and the Contemporary Subject (2006), will be followed in 2012 and her major volume, Perform Repeat Record: Live Art in History, co-edited with Adrian Heathfield, is due out in 2011.

Concise WW2 Overview - Not Just For Kids

This is an outstanding concise summary of WW2 history.

Somehow I never learned much history in school. I've been trying to teach myself, and recently I've read a lot of books on different aspects of WW2. But somehow I could still never get my mind around the way that everything fit together. This helped so much to give me that big picture.

It's extremely short, but there's a lot of information packed in those 52 pages. I wish the author would publish similar books about other periods of history.

Of extreme importance for all life on this planet, photosynthesis is one of the most widely studied topics in the physiology of plants. This book gives a fine overview of the subject and is suitable for readers who have some background in botany. It could though be read profitably by anyone, from those students intending to specialize in botany, as well as those who are curious as to the workings of photosynthesis. With serious discussion and research now being done in bringing about "artificial" photosynthesis, anyone interested in these kinds of developments will need to first have a solid grounding in the mechanisms behind photosynthesis in plants.

The authors are selective in what topics are covered in detail, but by far the most interesting part of the book is chapter 8, which overviews some of the latest research in photosynthesis (they don't discuss any of the research in artificial synthesis though). One of the first topics discussed is the research that indicates that PSII might alone be able to initiate electron transfer from water to NADP and carbon dioxide fixation, this taking place in a mutant version of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The authors are careful to point out that the complete absence of PSI in this system has not been established.

Still another interesting topic in this chapter concerns the determination of how chloroplasts develop via colorless organelles called `etioplasts'. The authors unfortunately do not spend too much time on this topic, but it is an excellent example of light-induced control of the transcription of genes, these genes encoding the proteins that control the transition from etioplast to chloroplast. This is followed by a somewhat more detailed discussion of chloroplast genetics, with the genetic map of the rice chloroplast given as an example. Mentioned also is the work currently done in the genetic engineering of the chloroplast, with the example of the green alga, which has been engineered to be deficient in PSII, PSI, ATP synthase, etc. The genetic engineering of the chloroplast shows some promise in alleviating the concerns of some who point to dangers in the development of transgenic plants, the latter topic of which is also discussed in this chapter. Instead of inserting transgenes into a plant genome, they are inserted into the genome of the chloroplast. Some researchers have claimed that such an approach will not be subject to the `gene silencing' problem that would make the resulting transgene expression unstable. Other researchers though have remained skeptical, and have pointed to other gene silencing mechanisms that might in be even more prevalent in the genetic engineering of the chloroplast. Either way these issues need more investigation, both from the standpoint of scientific curiosity and from an environmental one.

A superb dissertation on all aspects of Photosynthesis.

This book presents all aspects of photysynthesis in a fairly detailed manner. The material here covers everything form mitochondrial structure to phytochromes. There is just enough information here to keep the material brisk yet cogent. There are numerous charts and good quality illustrations. The electron transport cycle and phosphorylation sections deserve special mention for their beauty and usefulness. The 'Research in Photosynthesis' chapter is very good, except that I have the fifth edition (1994),and my guess is the material may be quite dated. I highly recommend this book for an under-graduate course in photosynthesis. If you wish to know what photosynthesis is and the why and how of an important biological function buy this book. Over and above being a very good biology book the discourse is presented in a elegant manner.

Not Terribly Exciting, But a Well Rounded Portrait of the Man

This is the first biography of Captain Smith I've read. It's thorough as it could be for his life pre-Titanic: genealogy, schools, sea experience, ships he served on and ships he commanded. Captain Smith said in 1907 "When anyone asks me how I can best describe my experience in nearly forty years at sea, I merely say, uneventful." Uneventful seems to have been the case. Still, a bus-driver or an airline pilot does not talk publicly about collisions and near-collisions. Captain Smith would not tarnish his image of being the safest captain of the safest passenger liners afloat. Mr. Cooper's portrait is sympathetic (too genealogical but amateur English researchers do have the family history bug.) but he does not hide evidence that Smith had his reckless moments : taking his ships out of harbour in spite of severe storms warnings; conning them through narrow or shallow channels, etc. Smith was called the "Storm King", and admired by Lightoller and others for pulling off his risks successfully.

This book describes the man more than the tragedy that made him famous.

Thorough, But Dry

Captain E.J. Smith is most famous for having been the captain of the RMS Titanic. This book is as complete a biography of the man as we probably ever will have.

Smith developed an early interest in the sea and while still a teenager began getting experience working on sailing ships that mainly operated on trade routes between England and the Americas for a shipping firm. After rising through the ranks and joining the White Star Line, he worked on steam ships for passenger routes usually between England and New York City. This included a long period as captain of the SS Majestic and he was also the first captain of the RMS Olympic, Titanic's sister ship.

As White Star's most experienced captain, he was assigned to the second of the Olympic-class liners, the RMS Titanic. It would be during this infamous journey that the ship would strike an iceberg in the mid-Atlantic and sink with about 1,500 deaths including Smith.

This book is likely as detailed a biography of E.J. Smith that will probably be ever written. Aside from his association with the Titanic disaster, Smith's life had little to note prior. As detailed as this book is, a lot of it is more just a description of the various routes ships he commanded took and one does not really learn much about the man himself. Unfortunately, it seems that there is just not a lot of facts to go on.

Overall, this was an interesting, but dry, book.

An important portrait of a central figure in the most notorious of maritime disasters

An excellent, enhanced portrait of the man foverever associated with the Titanic. Cooper's research is impeccable and his narrative makes a very interesting read from not only a maritime history perspective, but also from a social history perspective. His insistence on fact, refusal to say "did" when he means "might have" when faced with the more opaque gaps in Smith's story, is a refreshing approach when biographers are so often tempted to play fast and loose with facts. At the same time, his interpretation of what evidence we do have is never dry, and the portrait that emerges of Smith is as complete as we are ever likely to have. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Smith and his world.

The second time I read this book and it was still good. I remembered reading it and just loved the love triangle between the characters. They were hot and sort of realistic. It was enough of a story to leave you wanting more. I'm going to get more by this author.

This is a quick fun read. What do you do when you're in love with someone who doesn't let you seduce him. You fall for someone else who might possibly seduce both of you. Entertaining and interesting short hot read. Enjoy I did.
