The book has aged with me

I really enjoyed this book when it first came out but now, of course, I'm older and have a larger point of reference. I still find it well written and entertaining but it all means something different to me now. For one thing, I find it peculiar that there is a lack of information on what a father does or doesn't contribute toward the outcome of an offspring. It appears this author believes that how a child will turn out is entirely dependent on the mother. If she does something too little, or does the same thing too much, she will irretrievably warp her poor child, and do it all by herself. I wonder if I actually believed that back then? Probably. But now, and several adult children later, I don't.
This author apparently believes there isn't a single human (or animal) behavior that can't be explained in some logical way. All you have to do is look for the potential meaning in every benign activity (or lack of activity) and then you will recognize what it really means. In the end I was reminded of the Freudian quote - "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".

An enlightening book by a very enlightened man

I had read "The Naked Ape" by Desmond Morris and greatly enjoyed it. In January of 2014, I wrote the following review of it:

"I enjoyed this book tremendously. It's very instructive, full of new insight, and beautifully written. I especially liked the author's interpretation of the origin of the concept of God. Very highly recommended."

Then, I recently read "The Human Zoo" by the same author, which is a distinct book from The Naked Ape. When I tried to review this book (The Human Zoo) on 9/18/2014, I found that I couldn't because for some strange reason Amazon links the two books together, so a review for The Naked Ape appears for both books. So, I was told that I had already reviewed The Human Zoo, while I know for sure that I hadn't, because I hadn't read it until recently.

When I contacted Amazon's Customer Service to let them know about this mix up, I was told about this linkage and that I can edit my review. However, if I edit my review, it'll again appear on both books, which is very strange.

Anyway, I gave The Naked Ape five stars and reviewed it as above. Now, I give The Human Zoo four stars because although I enjoyed it, I didn't enjoy it as much as The Naked Ape. In The Human Zoo, I especially enjoyed Morris's discussion of human sub-species, in-groups vs. out-groups, population control, imprinting and mal-imprinting in the Animal Kingdom, the phenomenon of bond confusion in the human animal, and his discussion of the Stimulus Struggle principles # 3 and 6. I also liked very much his discussion of inventiveness and creativity.

What I didn't like was his interpretation of homosexuality as being caused exclusively by social factors, ignoring the most obvious genetic cause. I also don't agree with him when he says, ". . . of course, brief and fleeting homosexual activities occur for the vast majority of both sexes at some point in their lives, as part of general sexual exploration." I think this is a total exaggeration.

Finally, I also found his discussion of male fashion cycles somewhat lengthy and boring.

This book has been a significant influence on the thinking of a generation

Desmond Morris's 1967 book takes a zoological view of our species.

Some of his examples now seem a little dated in the age of smartphones and the internet of things, but the essence of what he says still holds true (and will hold true for millenia).

It certainly help in distinguishing those aspects of human behaviour that are cultural from those aspects of human behaviour that are speciel.

I first read this book back in the 1960s, and I still rank it as one of the 10 most important books that I ever read.

It may be foolish to consider Eric Raymond's recent collection of essays, The Cathedral and the Bazaar, the most important computer programming thinking to follow the Internet revolution. But it would be more unfortunate to overlook the implications and long-term benefits of his fastidious description of open-source software development considering the growing dependence businesses and economies have on emerging computer technologies.

The Cathedral and the Bazaar takes its title from an essay Raymond read at the 1997 Linux Kongress. The essay documents Raymond's acquisition, re-creation, and numerous revisions of an e-mail utility known as fetchmail. Raymond engagingly narrates the fetchmail development process while elaborating on the ongoing bazaar development method he uses with the help of volunteer programmers. The essay smartly spares the reader from the technical morass that could easily detract from the text's goal of demonstrating the efficacy of the open-source, or bazaar, method in creating robust, usable software.

Once Raymond has established the components and players necessary for an optimally running open-source model, he sets out to counter the conventional wisdom of private, closed-source software development. Like superbly written code, the author's arguments systematically anticipate their rebuttals. For programmers who "worry that the transition to open source will abolish or devalue their jobs," Raymond adeptly and factually counters that "most developer's salaries don't depend on software sale value." Raymond's uncanny ability to convince is as unrestrained as his capacity for extrapolating upon the promise of open-source development.

In addition to outlining the open-source methodology and its benefits, Raymond also sets out to salvage the hacker moniker from the nefarious connotations typically associated with it in his essay, "A Brief History of Hackerdom" (not surprisingly, he is also the compiler of The New Hacker's Dictionary). Recasting hackerdom in a more positive light may be a heroic undertaking in itself, but considering the Herculean efforts and perfectionist motivations of Raymond and his fellow open-source developers, that light will shine brightly. --Ryan Kuykendall

A great exploration of the world of Open Source

Even in 2016 this is still a terrific read for those interested in hacking, GNU/Linux, and the open source world at large. Raymond does a fantastic job analysing the methods and motives of the community with lots of real world examples to back up his observations. If you're trying to delve deeper into the world of open source software then this book is must read.

An exquisite work of art, a well thought-out treatise on the philosophy and mechanics of "Open-Source" software. Excellent discussions on: the real definition of "hackers', comparison of "Cathedral" versus "Bazaar" methods of software development, how "Bazaar" development produces higher quality software faster than the "Cathedral" method, and how the "Bazaar" method provides longevity to software. Finally, it is shown how the spirit of software craftsmanship is nurtured by the "Bazaar" method. All of these topics are supported by very clear and understandable case histories and logical reasoning. This book is even more important now with the growing influence of Linux and other "Open Source" software such as Mozilla's Firefox.

Essential book for anyone interested in Free / Open-Source

Simply put, this should be required reading for anyone interested in Free / Open-Source Software. In fact, I'd go on to say that it should be required reading by the second year of any Computer Science curriculum. Even if you have no intentions of developing (i.e. you're a development manager) or of diverging from the corporate cathedral way of making software, you should at least undertand alterative approaches so that you can identify the benefits and limitations of each.
On the other hand, if you're interested in not only understanding Free/OSS but also in participating in it, read this, then "The Unix Philosophy" and then "Open Source Development with CVS". C'mon in and join the fun!

Democratic objects

Another one of those excellent Fiell/Taschen overviews on design. This time, a huge 704 page, beautifully designed and printed pictorial collection of the essence of Scandinavian creativity. Although it covers the obvious furniture, metalware, glass, textiles and ceramics it also considers commercial products from companies like Fiskars, Hasselblad, IKEA, Lego, Saab, Volvo and nicely, even a company like Kompan, a producer of childrens playground equipment that is sold worldwide. I think there is a reason for the commercial and creative success of Scandinavian products: they believe that good, simple design should be applied to everything and be available to all, the introduction calls these products democratic objects.

The book is a joy to look at. Each designer (or company with their logo) starts on a spread with a small head shot of the person, some text and the rest of the space, sometimes over several pages, devoted to photos. Interestingly with so many photos (more than 1600) many of which came from various sources, the colour values are very similar and they all blend together throughout the book. I think Taschen are to be congratulated on producing (yet again) a stunning looking book that covers the subject so well and anyone involved with craft creativity and design will be pleased to have a copy.

Be aware before you buy this book (not like I did !) : This is a new edition which was made smaller to decrease the price. First edition was close to an A4 format, therefore it was more pleasant to read it. This new edition is only 15.5 x 20.5cm.

Incredible book for organizations facing change

I have read and used the material of this book with a wide variety of organizations. I have found the information clear, very helpful, and most importantly, insightful. It provides both the basic concepts for what makes all forms of reward systems work, as well as how to link them to the strategic direction of a company. There are descriptions of all forms of compensation, recognition and management practices. If you are global company or just competing in local markets, you will find something useful in this book. Its the most complete resource book that we have found available in the market. Buy it, use it, and re-read it because there are more things than one can absorb in a single sitting.
