           There was a time when North Kenwood–Oakland was plagued by gangs, drugs, violence, and the font of poverty from which they sprang. But in the late 1980s, activists rose up to tackle the social problems that had plagued the area for decades. Black on the Block tells the remarkable story of how these residents laid the groundwork for a revitalized and self-consciously black neighborhood that continues to flourish today. But theirs is not a tale of easy consensus and political unity, and here Pattillo teases out the divergent class interests that have come to define black communities like North Kenwood–Oakland. She explores the often heated battles between haves and have-nots, home owners and apartment dwellers, and newcomers and old-timers as they clash over the social implications of gentrification. A handbook for successful thesis writing

This is a really practical book which gives you strategies for planning your writing, developing your free writing ability and dealing with writers block - which are all extreemly valuable when writing a thesis. As someone who recently submitted their thesis - I would recommend this to students at any stage of their thesis write up. The early chapters deal with planning and supervison and the later chapers such as 'It is never too late to start' will be helpful to those who are turning to this text at the later stages. The chapter 'The last 385 yards' helps to prepare and motivate you to keep going when you think you are nearly there but still have the final time-consuming tasks of proof reading, editing and polishing to do. There are lots of really useful tips and advice which is presented in a very user friendly way.

Extremely helpful and practical tips for actually producing a written thesis. I particularly appreciated the section on what to do if you have to write your thesis in a rush! Although, as someone who fortunately doesn't have issues with writing, I didn't feel the need to go through all the practical exercises, I found it inspiring and comforting simply to read through sections when taking breaks from writing my thesis to remind me that there was an end in sight and a practical goal rather than some nebulous, ominous Thing that I was working towards.

Photos Done Right

Photos are what a photography book is supposed to be about, Right? Well this book is great in that respect. Frist a nice large format, something you can see the details in. Second great printing on good quality paper, to allow the afore mentioned details to show up. Third a reasonable amount of text to help the viewer to understand the photographers vision if it is not apparent after looking through the first time. Frist quick look through this book conveys a feeling which calls for a second viewing with more time to soak up what has been done and the feeling it produces.

Incredible book

I bought this book years ago, but I STILL go back to it and look at it even now. It is a thoroughly captivating book of photography. I don't think I've looked through a book of photography over and over like this before or since. The photographs are fascinating, beautiful, and even humorous in a few of them. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in modern art or unique figure photography.

    VW Passat TDI Repair Manual

    Wonderful content. I have owned multiple volkswagons and their repair manuals are exceptional. Being able to do my own repairs saves me money making the manual well worth the price. There is even a troubleshooting section where if you don't know exactly what is wrong with your car you can narrow it down based on the conditions you are experiencing. The book points you in the right direction. The diagrams of the components are clear and easy to read.

    Robert Bentley produces the best automotive repair manuals. The price reflects its products. Other repair manuals simply don't cut it. Pictures, diagrams, and descriptions are clear and precise. This manual is very easy to understand for D.I.Y, as long as you're a technically, mechanically minded person. One issue I have with this manual, is the use of some pictures and diagrams from the previous 90-93 B3 Passat. Otherwise it's an excellent manual.

    I like a hard copy rather than the DVD version, even though the cost is higher. Manual 1 is the engine manual, Manual 2 covers everything else and starts with the clutch.

    If you have a VW, and are doing any repairs yourself, buy the Bentley Manual! They don't depreciate in value, either!

    A simple approach to the golf swing..

    After reading the book, I went out to the range and hit shot after shot with solid contact and pretty good accuracy. I am a 20 handicap and could not seem to make solid contact. I thought that it was a fluke, so I went back to the range the next day and again hit the ball solidly. I hope to take it to the course next week. Some of the body movements are out of date but the idea of swinging the club is still way ahead of it's time compared to present teaching.

    Considering all of the books that have been written about golf, it is rare to find one that is so concise and clear. This book is all anyone will need to start learning golf. For those of us who have cluttered our minds with technical golf garbage over the years, this book is a great start to taking out the trash!

    This book gives a solid foundation to learning the most important aspect of the golf game -- the Swing. Without it, I would probably still be spending more time fixing divots on the fairway than enjoying the game of golf. Jones has some simple and effective techniques to develop the feel of the swing. It's seems awkward at first (especially for those who have learned to 'whip' their clubs) but once you get the feel of the club, you'll be amazed at how fast your clubs gets the ball to your target. Overall, it's not a band-aid solution, but rather a solid foundation to build upon your game.
